Current Projects / Today's finish
« on: April 01, 2021, 10:25:29 AM »
I finished up this colourful table runner this morning. The middle squares are from a fabric panel that I really had to fight with to get it reasonably straight enough to use. Pins, starch, steam, pulling/teasing the fabric with my fingers, redoing some seams.... I got there in the end.  :faints:

Minimal stitch in the ditch quilting done around the squares.

Now I just need to wait until we can finally have house guests for dinner again before I use it.

I'm starting a new table runner today and as I always do I clean my machine before I begin any new project, quilting or garment sewing.

This is the amount of 'fluff' removed by using the little cleaning brush that came with the machine and it's all from my last project which was also a table runner.

I should probably book it in for a service soon.

@Twiggy, the stitching you did is beautiful. May I ask if you do ruler quilting? If so, you have it down to perfection. I am waiting for my new Juki to arrive and I want to start practicing ruler quilting.

I've used the quilting bar with my walking foot and the wiggly line is one of the decorative quilting stitches on my machine (I just extended the stitch length).  I would like to try ruler quilting but as yet I haven't done it. I'd probably like a class on it so when the world opens up again I may look for one close by.

Thanks all for the lovely comments.

Is that the same design as the blocks in the The Whale ???

I don't think so but it does look very similar doesn't it. This runner is all HSTs and you can see similar here:

Just the binding left to sew and it's finished.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

That's going to be very chic - will you quilt the white bits in gold thread or black?

I'm not sure... perhaps I'll venture out of my quilting comfort zone this time  8). I'm a very 'plain' quilter and I usually go for a thread that won't stand out.

I've made one before in white/bright colours but this time I am using colours that might be more suited to Christmas, I think. Not the traditional red/green colours but lots of gold and black.

I missed buying the kit for this runner in these colours so I've sourced the fabric myself.  This morning has been spent marking/sewing/cutting/pressing/trimming all of the HSTs. My back is glad that there were just 30 of these to make.

Tomorrow i'll sew up the rows.

Tada!

Finished and given to the hubby. Not easy to see but there is a line of quilting to break up the big blocks. The stripy binding is quite effective and  masculine I think. He's now wishing the weather was a bit cooler lol.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Thanks for the quilting advice everyone and also for the link to the tutorials (will be spending some time looking at those!).

I discussed the suggestions with my husband and he wondered why I hadn't thought of using some decorative stitches from my machine. I never even thought of using one of those and if I am honest I often forget they are there .  He's decided to go with a combination of (not so close) outline stitching for the larger pieces and a brick decorative pattern down the middle of the smaller ones. Picture attached.

I think he's chosen well and it was a quick sew. Just a very fine striped fabric for the binding to be added. I'll try to remember to post a finished pic.

I'm working on a simple lap quilt for my husband and I'm now at the stage where I am ready to quilt it. I'm not going to heavily quilt it (I'd have to send it out to get a finish I'd be happy with) but I'm not sure if I should simply ditch quilt it or outline quilt it.  -<

Any thoughts?

It's the Cobblestone quilt from the fat quarter shop.

Hi, I'm new... / Hi from Manchester UK

Hi!
I am Nikki from Manchester. I started sewing about 40 years ago when my kids were little. I made a few outfits for them  but after that not much sewing was done. Now that I am retired, and recently bought myself a sparkly new sewing machine, I am back at it, but this time sewing for me.

I like to dabble in quilting, knitting, crochet and cross stitch too.  I try to spend at least 2 hours every day doing something 'crafty'.

Cheers!
