Technical Help / Re: Hem finish on skirt - thick fabric
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:37:12 AM »
If you Google 'Hong Kong finish' you'll see that bias tape encloses each side of your seams. Twice the work  :scream: but it allows the seam to be pressed open & lay flat. Your method for the hem is fine but your bias tape may be too thick & stiff for the skirt fabric. Staystitching the hem before applying tape would stop it from stretching.

Good economical use of fabric! As @Silver Rose says, the seams need a good press with plenty of steam. You've made a lovely neat job of covering the raw edges  but I think your tape is too thick & stiff. A Hong Kong finish on the seams would have been twice the work but with lightweight bias tape wouldn't have made the seams as stiff. The hem has lost its swish for the same reason. I can't see how you finished the hem. Generally, the thicker/heavier the fabric the deeper the hem. This allows the weight of the fabric to help the drape. I'd have turned it to the inside in one fold (at least 70mm) stitched a lightweight bias tape over the raw edge then slip stitched the hem up by hand. Or you could press the hem to the outside then machine lightweight bias tape over to give you the contrast band on the outside.Well done for making your own tape - did you weave it? If so it's only one thickness, but if you've made bias tape then the folds have made it too thick for swishing. You've chosen an ambitious project, in a challenging fabric, congratulations on your maths & design skills, I look forward to seeing your future projects.

Sewing Machines / Re: Pfaff Expression 710

@Sara-S the presser foot lowers when you start sewing & raises when you stop. There's a foot up/down button as well. My Pfaff is a different model to @Gernella but I think this is a standard feature.

Wow! That is really pretty. If I were to do patchwork, that's the sort of thing I'd like. But I'd only want to make one  :D.

Mine is finished.

Phew! That's a relief, in my diary I have the 5th as posting date so was panicking yesterday.

Oooh, get you with your mug rugs finished! I got some fabric out today and had a dither. I have an idea for the top, and a vague thought of patchwork on the underside but mine might be going to a patchwork expert so it's probably best if I don't.

Your calculations make a lot of sense. Then you'll have a second career/side hustle making covers & doing repairs. Anything boaty, like anything golf related, carries a hefty price tag.

« on: February 24, 2021, 10:20:15 AM »
I'd press the seam allowances then pin the zip on the WS. Stitch using your zip foot (not an invisible zip foot) from the WS which will keep your stitching lined up with the teeth. Pin parallel to the zip teeth with heads towards you so they're easy to remove, don't attempt to stitch over ten as that will make the stitch line wobble. It won't look especially pretty on the RS but will be adequate I think. (Apologies if the pin thing is teaching you to suck eggs as I've seen your beautiful wedding dress workmanship)

Welcome @jmatt  Cushion covers are a good start. I believe those 1950s Singers are great workhorses.
