A Good Yarn / Over tight stranded colour work
« on: January 15, 2019, 22:37:39 PM »
I am attempting my first go at stranded colour work.
I am doing a sweater out of Knit Now 96, I cant link to the pattern.  It has bands of colour work separated by bands of textured pattern in the main colour.

The first colorwork band is much tighter than the textured areas

Is there anything I could do to even things out, other than pulling it back and reknitting the colour work with a larger needle?

A Good Yarn / Use by dates on yarn
« on: November 30, 2018, 17:28:59 PM »
In the summer I bought some fabulous yarn at a wool show.

I've just started to knit some fingerless gloves and noticed the ball band.

Why?

A Good Yarn / Going to indulge myself
« on: August 09, 2018, 12:49:06 PM »
I've recently been knitting baby things in pretty and sensible but boring acrylic.

The British Wool Show is running near me this Fri/Sat and so I'm off to buy something luxurious and self indulgent to make a couple of scarves for the winter. :wool:

What lies beneath... / Knicker making
« on: June 19, 2018, 10:20:40 AM »
Years ago, on the old forum, someone put a link to a knicker making video.

It was in Spanish, but very understandable.

I've just found loads of lingerie elastic in the stash and fancy knocking out a few pairs, just for fun.

Any ideas girls?

A Good Yarn / Life is too short for this
« on: June 12, 2018, 14:22:57 PM »
Whilst browsing the promotions section of my emails (I am bored) I found a link to a free pattern for  a Cotton + Linen Bath Wrap.

Sounds nice thought I, so I clicked on it.

FFS, its a towel.  Who on this earth knits towels?

Sorry, should this have been on the Rant Thread?

Patterns Discussion / Sewdirect reviews
« on: April 19, 2018, 14:42:59 PM »
I got an email yesterday from Sewdirect asking me to review my recent purchases.

I only  reviewed Vogue 9300 as I haven't opened the others yet.

My review was somewhat scathing as I think it is a terrible pattern, the Tiltons need to move on from tee shirts.

I was told my review would be published after being checked by their moderators, needless to say it hasn't appeared yet and I don't suppose it will.  I must remember to check Pattern Review and slate it on there.

Publications / La Maison Victor part 2
« on: April 03, 2018, 14:35:43 PM »
I saw La Maison Victor mag in W.H.Smith today, apparently its now going to be a regular publication.

i do like the fact that you can look on the back and see line drawings of the patterns.

There were 3 patterns that interest me, so I didn't think £5.99 was too bad, I know I'll have to trace them but thats no worse than sticking together a PDF.

Access All Accessories / Baby changing bags
« on: March 14, 2018, 18:18:59 PM »
Has anybody made a changing bag and can recommend a particular pattern?

I need to make one for DD, after two boys the old one is getting tatty.

I've looked for patterns but there is so much choice I'd love to get a recommendation of one that really works.

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Schmetz needles
« on: March 03, 2018, 14:26:19 PM »
I was reading @Gernella's post about gutermann thread and had a little browse in the eBay shop.

These needles came up at a very good price.

Needless to say I have already bought mine :ninja:

No use to me but have just had an email about a new Craftsy course covering machine embroidery lettering.

Looks rather good.

Imi, how is Elvis's spelling?

Vintage Machines / Are button holes better on all old machines?
« on: February 01, 2018, 19:46:47 PM »
I've been reading various threads which mention the superior buttonhole sewing capabilities of older machines.

I have a Singer 498 which, at a guess, dates from the late 60s.

I know it has settings for sewing buttonholes but have not used them for years.

Is it worth me getting this out and having it serviced in the hope it will produce a decent buttonhole?

My lovely Janome does really nice buttonholes on shirt fronts but has a bit of a hissy fit on things like coller stands

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Maxilock stretch thread
« on: January 21, 2018, 15:27:31 PM »
After problems with my coverstitcher skipping stitches, I had a look around t'Internet and lots of people recommended Maxilock stretch thread, so I bought some.

I've finally got around to trying it and I am very impressed so far.

I've just hemmed a couple of simple knit skirts and normally I would have had some places where the looped thread didn't catch in correctly.  I followed the tension settings shown on the Janome/Elna FB group and everything is hunky dory.

I'm very pleased as including postage it wasn't cheap but I'm happy to buy it if it means I can get a good result first time rather than faffing about sorting things out.

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Hobby craft sale
« on: January 03, 2018, 15:08:23 PM »
I've just been to Hobby craft to buy some thread and they said the 50% off sale starts tomorrow.

I just bought the one reel I needed for tonight, might have to go back tomorrow :D

Here is a baby blanket I made for a new GN.

The original block was 12" but with the help of Maths Goddess Brenda I sized it up to 36".

It is backed in a wonderfully soft pale yellow flannel and lightly quilted to maintain the softness.

Isn't it amazing how easy it is to upload photos when you follow Fran's directions rather than guessing and having a sulk when it doesnt work -<.

Current Projects / Stars for Stella
« on: December 07, 2017, 14:33:35 PM »
Have just finished this a present for a new GN.

The original block was 12", so with the help of the Maths Goddess, I sized it up to 36". thanks Brenda.

It is backed with a very soft yellow flannel and lightly quilted to preserve the softness.

Hope she and her Mum like it and use it.
