@Sewbee - I ordered a 720 from my local dealer last June. I'd done a lot of research on prices but couldn't find any difference in any of the dealers. I paid £2350 and the s/m was delivered to my home exactly 4 weeks after I'd ordered it. I'm absolutely delighted with it. I already have the 570QE but the 720 has so many more features that I use, and I've now added the embroidery module too.

If you do go ahead, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. :)

Hi Kenora @Kenora!

What features do you particularly like on the 720 that are not on the 570?

When do you decide to se the 570 and what makes you turn to the 720?

(I am trying to decide if I should keep the 570. I do mainly garment sewing but am also delving into machine appliqué and a little quilting.)

Sewing Machines / What to Trade in for New SM
« on: February 15, 2020, 18:55:59 PM »
If I go ahead and buy the Bernina 720, which of these, if any, would you trade in:

- Bernina 570QE - three years old
- Bernina 1008 - six months old
- Bernina 830 Record

I know my dealer would only give about £100 for the 830 so I think I will keep that one. But which of the other two, if any?

I can find reasons to keep them all but what individual needs four machines! The 1008 was purchased for nostalgia’s sake - and as a manual back-up when I heard it was being discontinued.

The obvious one is the 570. It has the 5.5 mm width and CB hook.

What to do! Any suggestions, anyone?

If it helps the old one I have just re homed is an Artista 180 and it is approximately 18 years old, it has been used a lot but not for the last couple of years.
The 720 looks lovely

Celia, That does make me feel better. If it lasted even 15 years, I would be happy. I am 67 now and don’t want to be buying another machine in five years; however, I didn’t expect to be want to buy another one so soon after buying the 570.

I am used to keeping machines for donkey’s year’s! I had a 930 Record and 1260 before I bought the 570. Machine buying has changed so much since then.

Eighteen years is a fabulous age for an Artista. I just looked it up. A very nice machine and computerised, too. That gives me hope

That’s the same price the other dealers are charging now - except my local dealer. It’s not the £100 that bothers me, it’s the principle of it.

Yes, it is a gorgeous machine. We have the same taste

That is appalling usually BERNINA have a list price and very few dealers will change this, what model are you looking at?

I have just acquired an older BERNINA which needed a lot of cleaning and sorting, I have always wanted one that did the large lettering but they are sooo expensive, so  I am very pleased with the one I have but am unsure how long it will last as I know the boards for these machines are not repairable.

I was looking at the 720. It’s a bit bigger and therefore better dexterity with arthritic hands and more harp space.

I am shocked he did this.

I just checked my notes. He went over by £100, not £125 - even so ...

Your comment about their being so expensive and the possibility of computerised parts failing is  one of the reasons I am hesitating. £2K+ is a LOT of money to last only 5-10 years. Or is it? I have one computerised Bernina, the older model 570, and presumably that will only last another 7 years max. I have had it three.

I have recently been toying with the idea of another machine but I am only in the research phase - and hope I stay there

Sewing Machines / Juki Sewing Machines

Oh dear! I have a bade case of SMAD (sewing machine addiction)! I certainly don’t need a machine but I am Interested in learning about the Juki, in particular the Juki DX-7. Does anyone have one or seen one demoed? I wonder how it’s quality and performance compares to Bernina.

This is a fascinating thread! I have been toying with getting a machine that does embroidery. Well my old model Bernina 570QE does but the embroidery is an extra piece of equipment to buy (about £1000, I believe). I need to know more before any decisions are to be made.

If you want an easy life, go for the Babylock. My dealer tried to sell me the BLCS2 first off and I said no thank you because it was so expensive. The other one I had in mind was the Britannia. I had read about the Janome 2000 as being temperamental so ruled it out. Anyway, I agreed to try the Babylock and it not only looked lovely, it sewed beautifully with no problem - so easy! Threading is a breeze because it has the jet air threading. I then decided to try the Britannia for comparison but as soon as he opened it I said no thank you. It was so much bigger than the Babylock BLCS2 and appeared clunky! Needless to say I bought the Babylock and I am delighted with it. My dealer doesn’t sell Juki, which is another I might have looked at because it has good reviews, although the threading on the Babylock is a dream. I love the choice I made even though it was expensive. It’s a quality product.

The burnt smell from bulb happened to me, too with the Bernina 830. New bulb solved it.

If anybody is interested there is this machine on the Pembertons site for £195.  No idea what condition as no picture yet but their machines  come with a 1 year guarantee normally.

I let this machine go some years ago and have regretted it ever since.  Unfortunately I dare not bring another machine into the house.

There was a Juki Exceed F600 for sale as well at £400, which had me nibbling my fingers but something is going to have to die and need replacing before I think about that, although IDT is hard to give up, as I have found over the last few weeks.

https://www.psmc.co.uk/acatalog/Reconditioned_Machines.html

I think this must have got sold. I can’t find it at the link. Would make a lovely machine for someone.

ETA it is there. There is just no picture.

@Gernella Yes I did, although it was quickly followed with thoughts of my completely mad to spend so much money on a coverstitch machine but then, as my dealer said, life is to short!
