I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Cheap fabric in York
« on: August 12, 2019, 14:09:49 PM »
For anyone in the York area, I've just seen on FB that Junk & Jewels are selling all their fabric for £2 a metre until the end of August.

They often have some nice stuff but I daren't go as I'm supposed to be reducing stash not adding to it :'(

A Good Yarn / Teaching a child to knit
« on: August 05, 2019, 22:41:47 PM »
I’ve been asked to teach my sons GFs daughter to knit. She will be spending some time with us each week once she and her mum move in with DS in the next few weeks.

I’m looking forward to it as a chance to get to know her better.

My problem is it best to start with  English style or do I teach her the Continental style I use.

My intention is to cast on about 30 stitches and do a few rows to give her something to work on. Learning to cast on first always seems so hard.

Courses & Classes / Westalee rulers course
« on: July 19, 2019, 21:08:19 PM »
I've just seen this and am very tempted.

I've been doing bits and bobs with my ruler set but know a workshop would be very useful.

I'm looking at the beginners one in March next year.

Think it will be my Christmas present to me 0_0

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Janome 8200 buttonhole foot
« on: June 09, 2019, 14:38:56 PM »
I’be just had a frustrating morning trying to sew the buttonholes on my Stylearc Martha overshirt.

It’s taken me ages to realise I was using the buttonhole foot from my old Janome8200, not my new machine.

When I use the correct foot everything works fine :D

If anyone can use the foot from the 8200 it’s theirs for the cost of postage, don’t want that faff again.

I thought I had orderes a clear foot for my Evolve but by mistake ordered one for the Enspire.

Stupidly didn't realise, fitted it and the needles caught on it   I can't send it back or use it so if anyne wants it they are very welcome.  There is a slight snag on the plastic that I am sure will disappear with a gentle file.

Free to good home.

House Beautiful / Roman Blind help
« on: March 29, 2019, 20:06:20 PM »
This weekends project is a Roman blind for my office.

I have some lovely fabric from the £1 a metre room at Immanuels and a new blind kit from Terry's Fabrics.

I've never used a kit before and so have been reading the instructions!  This kit includes a pocketed tape to hold the rods and secure the cords replacing those pesky little rings.  This looks like a great idea, attach the tape to the lining and Bobs your uncle.

Just before I embark on this blind can anybody tell me if they have used this system and if so did it work OK?

The puritan in me keeps whispering that if it is easier to do, it won't be as good. :S

Fun with Fabric / Need a name
« on: March 17, 2019, 18:32:39 PM »
My 6 year old DGS has been sewing at school and now wants to sew with grandma :loveit: 0_0 :D

I have lots of brightly coloured wool and some bodkins but for the life of me I can’t remember the name of that fabric we used to learn to embroider on. It’s woven with holes in a grid formation.

We did a little bit yesterday with some pre punched felt and he enjoyed it and I do want to encourage this. Anything to keep him off computer games.

In the wardrobe / Simplicity jacket
« on: March 04, 2019, 19:43:27 PM »
I am attempting to make this using this.

I can't decide how to best utilize the diagonal effect of the fabric, which is quite pronounced.

The fronts  could form a vee but then do I do the sides in the opposite way and then what do I do with the back?

Or am I overthinking the whole thing and would I be best having all the lines the same way?

Your Favourite Suppliers / Sewing Machine Sales
« on: February 28, 2019, 23:45:38 PM »
Has anybody used Sewing Machine Sales based in Whitley Bay?

They have a good price on a machine I’m interested in but I don’t know anything about them. They are close enough to me that I could go in person but I’d appreciate anybody’s personal experience.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Various books
« on: February 02, 2019, 15:44:24 PM »
I am having a massive declutter and have decided I have far too many books, so if anybody wants anything I only want the postage costs.

As some of you know we had a fire in the summer and so some have very minor smoke damage. They were mostly in a room that wasn’t affected by the fire but I know some people are far more sensitive to smells than I am.

I’ll keep popping things on as I unpack the boxes.    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / The fun has started
« on: January 19, 2019, 15:44:01 PM »
I tried to post pics yesterday of my redecorated sewing room in its empty glory but everything crashed so today I hope I can do things better as I now have some furniture.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I am determined that this time I am going to organise things properly.  I knew I wanted a good sized work station and a bit of browsing on FB Marketplace and Gumtree produced two desks. Next week I get the last of my furniture back, so a couple of bookcases and a small chest of drawers will be installed.

Hope I can start some actual sewing soon 0_0
