Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Sewing room in new house
« on: October 21, 2021, 18:58:22 PM »
Happily I have a sewing room in the new house.
It has a futon in it, which the old one didn't but is good for OH to sit on and chat with me, and also for any extra guests.

Having unpacked some sewing stuff the room seems to have its own theme which is white and light wood furniture and then a few storage boxes, a sewing box etc which are mostly a warmer pink with green.
I've temporarily covered the old futon with an off white cotton throw and stuck some coral pink cushions from the old house.

I am working away on a rainbow quilt I thought might cover the futon, but think it'll end up on one of the beds instead.

So far I have all the machines, thread sewing tools/feet etc in but have left most of the fabric elsewhere in sealed plastic tubs. Ditto sewing magazines and some patterns.

I think I would like to replace the bookcase with two narrower ones and rearrange things slightly.
The layout is interesting avoiding the wall lights, radiator, power points door etc but seems to work quite well.

Alterations Advice Please / The Mending Thread
« on: October 21, 2021, 10:10:14 AM »
Whilst definitely not in the same league as @Sandra (who does this professionally!) Yesterday I did a load of mending jobs.

These are just the ones I had access to (not the bag of outstanding mending I packed somewhere).

Anywhere here goes with the first one

Issue: Had some aqua PJ trousers with a lovely lace trim (self sewn). I had managed to tear the lace when we were living at the apartment by climbing up a step ladder in my PJs (don't ask) and standing on the hem of one leg with the other foot.
Fix: Threaded Queenie with aqua thread and zig zagged the tear. Its not perfect but they are now back in rotation.

In the wardrobe / wardrobe sort out
« on: September 15, 2021, 20:14:19 PM »
I'm going to have a wardrobe sort out now we've moved.

I did have a clear out before I moved of things that were too small or constricting in any way.

I'm now wondering if I need to get rid of anything largely polyester as they are horrible when a hot flush hits.
I'm also not sure I want anything 100% wool, as that's too warm.
Also I have a lot of coats, and lots of footwear of various comfort levels.

I am doing more social activities and not going in an office anymore, so I guess that changes what's useful in a wardrobe.

Anyone done something similar? And if so how did you tackle it?

House Beautiful / Futon Cover
« on: July 30, 2021, 18:44:39 PM »
OH has got an old futon, quite comfortable as a sofa and a bed, but with a water stain on it from when a velux window was left open in the rain.
In the new house it will probably go in the sewing room as extra guest sleeping.

I will make a removable cover for it.
Has anyone done that and have you any tips?

I have an unused duvet cover I thought I could adapt.

Sewalongs and Competitions / Thoughts about August contest
« on: July 26, 2021, 16:57:49 PM »
Hi folks, got a few options for August

- extend the Awesome Accessories for another month.
- have a summer break
- have the jellyroll/1m contest, but I'll need some help coming up with some sensible rules as I've not got them sorted.

I have now completed on my house sale and moved out, with most stuff in storage and some stuff at OH's flat, where  we're living temporarily until we can move to our bungalow in mid/late August hopefully.

House Beautiful / Sewing Room layouts
« on: June 10, 2021, 08:01:54 AM »
I love having a sewing room, and in the new house we hope to be buying I will have a lovely big room.
It has sloping ceilings in part of the room, and a big built in wardrobe which we will be using for our out of season / smart clothing.
I will have some fabric storage in another room and space in the full height end of the room for some bookcases.

There's then space in the part of the room with the window and the sloping ceilings for tables, desks, ironing board, shorter cabinets and etc.
I'll start with repurposing stuff I already have and gradually improve it.

So ideas please of the most useful things to have in this space.
my current plan just has stuff round the walls in a U shape, with the ironing board put up in front of the radiator.
The available space is about 2.5m(side walls one with radiator)  by 3.5m (window wall) and only full height by the window.

I like enough space for 3 sewing machines (sewing machine, overlocker, coverhem) on the table, and it'd be nice to have space to cut out as well. For sewing I'd be sitting, but for cutting out standing, which I guess pushes the cutting table (if I had one - I don't now) either into the centre of the room or up underneath the window.
I have various bookcases, cupboards, tables, risers and other stuff which might/might not make the move depending on what might be useful (second hand/argos/ikea cheapies)

I'm open to ideas!

Welcome to TSP's Refashion & Upcycle competition

1st - 30th June 2021

The aim of this contest is to re-use existing items instead of cutting into new yardage. These can be from a charity shop, friends/family or the depths of your own wardrobe/linen cupboard.
Take an item or items and create a new and different garment/accessories.

Rules:
Label your submission clearly as an entry, and number if you have more than one entry.
A photo of your source (the initial item or items) and another photo of the final item must be included in your entry. Additional pictures may also be included.

The garment/accessory must be sewn. Self-drafted patterns or commercial patterns may be used; they may be previously used or new. More than one source item can be used to create the final product.

The original item or items must be changed substantially to create a new garment. The item can be of the same type (dress to dress) or something entirely different (tablecloth to dress). However, the new item must be distinctly different from the original (for example, embellishments only do not qualify).

At least half of the new item must be made from reconstructed / recycled items (notions such as zippers or interfacing do not count in the total).

Sewing starts on 1st June and ends on 30th June. You can do preparation work (ripping seams, cutting, disassembling, etc.) before the start date.
Make sure to post a 'before' picture together with your entry here. All entries should be posted by July 6th in this thread.
