The Haberdashery / Cone of thread for normal sewing machine?
« on: April 19, 2019, 19:35:35 PM »
Can you use the large cones of polyester thread on an ordinary sewing machine?
If so, how does it work?
I don’t know the correct terms to google.  :S

I have a basic Singer overlocker that’s great and I bought a few cones of thread for it and recently purchased a 250m reel of Gütermann thread and wondered about the difference in price v difference in quality and how to choose the right type of thread for your project?

I’d probably stick with the branded polyester or cotton thread for dressmaking but I’m mostly playing at sewing and making bags, bunting and cushion covers etc. at the moment so don’t want to waste money on expensive thread if I don’t need to.

Access All Accessories / Sewing machine (overlocker) carrying bag
« on: March 14, 2019, 09:55:14 AM »
Does anyone have a link to a pattern suitable for making a bag to take my overlocker to my sewing class?

I have a lovely strong bag for my main sewing machine from RooBeauty that has a vinyl outside printed with vintage sewing related images. However, I’ve looked online and the ones big enough (square) for an overlocker are very expensive. (£50?)

I was wondering about adapting a bag pattern and making the bag using slightly thicker cotton (curtain type?) fabric.
Perhaps incorporating 2 long zips that meet on top, in the middle.
What would I use to make the bottom a bit more solid?

If anyone has tackled a similar project, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks.

You can purchase 6 issues of Prima magazine with free sewing pattern - you must tick the box that appears on the last page (?) when ordering. 6 issues for £6 BUT ONLY IF YOU SIGN UP TO DIRECT DEBIT.

If you pay by credit/debit card, the offer isn’t available.

After 6 months you will be billed £15.75 for the final 6 issues unless you cancel your subscription 28 days before your final direct debit goes out of your bank account.

In the wardrobe / Prima magazine pattern sizing
« on: March 05, 2019, 08:41:33 AM »
I have a question about magazine paper patterns please.

I was sorting through some old boxes of stuff and discovered 5 Prima paper patterns that are about 10 years old. I remember getting a magazine subscription one year as a Xmas present from my sister and I obviously saved a few patterns thinking I might get around to sewing them when I have some spare time.

Are they easy enough patterns to follow and what’s the sizing like on them?

In the wardrobe / Interface for stretch jersey fabric
« on: February 25, 2019, 08:54:04 AM »
I think I’m guilty of running before I can walk but I’m hoping one of you lovely ladies can offer some advise.

I’m making a simple style soft draping blouse type top (not a tee shirt style) with no separate collar but I need to use interfacing around the neckline section.

The material I’m using is a printed cotton jersey. (It was a remnant in the fabric shop and the lady said she thought it was a cotton jersey, but I’ve no idea really.) I did the stretch test and it’s 20% stretch.

Looking online at Interfacings, I see you can buy fusible knit interfacing but do I just need to buy a lightweight one? I’ll have to buy online as we’re not likely to be visiting Cork city for some while and there’s nowhere else locally.

If you have any specific recommendations, I’d be very grateful!

House Beautiful / Re-cover IKEA Poang chair
« on: February 09, 2019, 14:25:24 PM »
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  I’m hoping to put a cover on my chair as the cream one gets grubby easily. I ordered some curtain weight fabric online and it’s arrived so I can make a start.

The original cover is one long piece with a fold over cushion at the top and a flat section in the middle between the back and the seat pad.

I was originally thinking of just making a loose cover to fit over the existing cream cover but I’m not sure how to do it.
I usually make simple cushion covers by doing the envelope (no zips) style and hoping I can do something similar here.
Do you think that will work?

I could try adding zips but as I don’t have any long zips I’d have to order them online and wait until they arrived. I’d definitely appreciate advice on what sort of zips to buy.

Access All Accessories / Thread & needle advice please?
« on: January 19, 2019, 15:17:56 PM »
I really am a beginner so please be gentle with me.  :sew: :)

I’m attempting to repair DS’s lunch bag and it has a thin plasticy (?) outer cover with a metallic insulated lining. One seam was completely ripped so I’ve cut it all open at the seams and plan to re-sew it with a fold over top.
However, I’m wondering if I can just use ordinary gütermann polyester thread?  :thread:
And what type of needle?
I’m thinking a universal needle size 14.

All advice gratefully received.

Sewing Machines / Computerised sewing machines and magnets??
« on: December 01, 2018, 12:48:34 PM »
No idea where to post this question but I was wondering... I’ve got a new (very basic) computerised sewing machine with LCD screen and I remember years ago being told you mustn’t wave a magnet near to an LCD screen.
I have a magnetic pin cushion that usually sits just to the right of my machine and I’m now wondering if I need to move it away and stick with my homemade pin cushion instead?

Sorry if this seems a daft question.  :(

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Ireland
« on: December 01, 2018, 09:14:12 AM »
Hello there, I’m new here and looking forward to learning a lot more from you lovely people. I’m not exactly a newbie sewer but only have basic knowledge and my interest was rekindled following a short ‘intro to sewing’ course I completed recently which was well taught with great craic.
I’m originally from the U.K. but now live on the beautiful south west coast of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way, hence my nickname.
I recently bought a new sewing machine that’s got a few more fancy stitches as I like tarting up my projects a bit, although it’s waiting for Santa to deliver it.  :\
