What lies beneath... / Re: Today I've made a bra
« on: March 03, 2019, 09:53:16 AM »
Being still very new here, I've been pootling around seeing what fascinating things people have done.

I must say I am astounded at my sister's multi skills! Bra-making is something I have often thought of as I am a funny size but I've never known where to begin.

I'll be back!!!

Thank you @Yellowfeather. He was supposed to be a man who got roped in to help out with his wife's 'Fashion through the Ages' show and this was 'Fashion of the Future'.  I enjoyed making it - and he enjoyed sourcing all the extras!

Nice to have you aboard, Mick. I'm new too.
I'm wondering what sort of fabric crafts you have experimented with.

@Acorn I do see what you mean! I hope it wasn't too much of a shock coming upon Mr B like that <aaagh smiley>

Sewing Machines / Re: Now I know why I never touch my machine
« on: March 01, 2019, 19:48:31 PM »
@Lowena , I feel your pain.

I recently bought a second hand overlocker and had no end of trouble getting to grips with it. Poor Ploshkin got almost daily waily emails from me and did a lot of thinking and suggesting. Like you, I used to be a teacher and was used to being the one who knows things.

The sewing machine chap came back twice to sort out my woes and was very nice about it and didn't charge me. Both times it was me being fairly stupid that had caused the problem  -<  I was on the verge of getting rid of the machine and even now, I'm wary about approaching it. Unlike you, though, I would gladly go on a course if I could find one!

Hope you have more success soon.

Experimenting to see if I can link a photo

Ooh, ooh, it worked.

This is Mr Bear in a costume he wore last year for about 5 minutes on stage in a 'Farndale TG' farce.
The biggest issue for me was fitting a woman-shaped pattern to a paunchy man-shaped man  ;)

eta: I notice other photos are small and click-onable. If what I have done is unsuitable, please say and I'll remove it.

Thank you for the suggestions, E, e and P.

I've never heard of power net, I shall investigate forthwith. I found fusible stretch interfacing and saw that it seems only available in lightweight. Not sure if that would be robust enough for a waistband.

The waistband is only about 1.5 ins when finished. As it is slightly curved  I don't think I'll go for woven elastic.

Fun with Fabric / Interfacing for 4 way stretch waistband
« on: February 28, 2019, 14:47:43 PM »
I have tried to be self-sufficient and find out by myself but my searches on here have yielded nothing and my internet searches are like trying to get a cup of water from the Niagara Falls!

New to overlockers, I have made a pair of very stretchy skinny trousers, jeans styling. The waistband is slightly shaped, not straight. I really don't know what type of interfacing to use. I don't want it to stretch much but neither do I want it solid, like a belt.

I would value advice from those who have knowledge / experience in matters stretchy.  This includes advice on where to buy such interfacings online, please.

Gosh, I feel I've had a lovely welcome, thank you all.

Mind you, sneaking in on Ploshkin's coat-tails is a bit underhand, isn't it? I see she is a right old chatterbox regular contributor  ;)

Well, StitchinTime, there are three younger Ploshes - perhaps Ploshmini, Plosh twinny1 and Ploshtwinny2 as well as Mama Plosh, whose skill with needles and suchlike, started it all.

I wouldn't normally be hanging around at his time doing a Plosh takeover but I'm waiting for my gardener to turn up  0_0

Thank for the welcome, folks. It's not just me that sits with a brew after brekkie looking at a screen, then  :)

MaxiPlosh, hehehe.

Saying hello from East Dorset.

I've been looking for a suitable forum for a while, on and off, but the ones I found were not very much used. Acquiring an overlocker inspired me to search again and I landed here.

While waiting for approval, I lurked and read and, to my surprise found Ploshkin. I'm her big sister! Thought she belonged to a quilting forum and (whisper it) I don't quilt  :ninja:

Dressmaking, householdy things, costumes, knitting are my main interests.
