Sewing Machines / Builder's dust on and probably in sewing machine
« on: February 08, 2022, 12:46:45 PM »
All doors were taped up, windows were opened, there was a gap we had missed  :(. My whole work room is covered in a thick layer of  :lipsrsealed: ing dust. I could have wept.

My fear is one of my sewing machines doesn't have its cover on. I was thinking of starting with the vacuum cleaner, taking off all that is visible on the outisde, then trying to get in about the gubbins inside, also with the vacuum.

Is there anything I shouldn't do? I know not to blow as that might push the dust in further.

House Beautiful / Home made Roller Blind
« on: February 08, 2022, 12:35:58 PM »
Hello again, long time no post, I've been busy having my house renovated never again.

Can I make my own roller blind from quite thick furnishing fabric? Would it be too big a roll when it's open as the fabric's so thick? It'll be about 2m wide and 1.4m long.

If it's a possibility, could someone talk me through the process please?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I had a look and couldn't find anything.

I am working on a scrappy diamonds something or other, maybe a quilt. The blocks are made up of nine diamonds sewn into one big diamond. Matching up the seams is the tricky bit (I assume because there's a lot of bias stuff going on in the edges) so I had a brainwave that starching the fabric would help it not to shift. Trouble is, I've already cut out a lot of the diamonds. I did starch some the other day (but now know that you're not supposed to iron them whilst still wet  ) and they're nice and firm it'll be like sewing cardboard

Before I go any further, should I (a) starch the fabric I haven't cut yet; (b) starch everything, including the already cut bits, to within an inch of its life or (c) forget starching and just woman up and work harder on matching seams?

Sewing Machines / Jones 431 straight stitch
« on: August 20, 2020, 15:21:58 PM »
Help! I've been helping someone who has dug out an old Jones 451 sewing machine. We've got it threaded and going  . In the days between seeing it for the first time last week to now it has changed from straight stitch to zig zag. There is a button with M and a couple of zig zag/button hole options. It's on M but sewing zig zag. Does anyone have any experience of this machine and can point me in the right direction? I don't have the machine here so will have to relay any suggestions to the owner.

What lies beneath... / It needs to be strapless ...
« on: June 04, 2020, 09:46:29 AM »
I have problems with my shoulders from time to time when wearing a bra is excruciating/impossible. I ordered a strapless one from Bravissimo but it had rubberised bits which made putting it on as painful as wearing a normal one so it's going back  :(

Can anyone think of something I could make that would give me a bit of dignity support? If it could fasten at the front that would be even better.

Access All Accessories / Filling for a pincushion
« on: May 05, 2020, 14:04:12 PM »
I wasn't sure which section to put this in so hope this is okay  :)

I've heard of filling pincushions with sand or sheep's wool. Has anyone tried anything like that? Did your pins prefer it to normal stuffing?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Wool Pressing Mat
« on: April 27, 2020, 17:55:21 PM »
Apologies if this has been talked about elsewhere, I did a search and couldn't see anything.

Has anyone got one, or tried one? There's an ad that keeps coming up on FB for one from LoveSew and it's not a bad price. Amazon has a bigger one which is always better, as we all know  ;), but it's over £60. I've got to this great age without one. Have I been missing out or are they worth the money and will it change my life?  :)

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Is this fixable?
« on: April 17, 2020, 18:40:32 PM »

It's a sort of QAYG so the layer it's sticking out of was sewn to hold that one down, IYSWIM, so I don't think I can unpick it. I can see from the stitching on the back that I've already tried to stick it back in (I can't remember how, it was a while ago and I put it to one side to ignore think about it).

Is there anything I can do?

I've just cut six of Aldi's fat quarters (bless, their measuring tape must be a bit out  :P) into strips to make my first string quilt. Now that I've had a look on t'internet for inspiration (doh!) I've decided I'd have been better doing them all the same width. I'll know the next time  :D

When you're putting them together, if they are cut the same width, are all those pesky little seams supposed to match up??  :o

I thought I was being clever doing this as a disappearing nine patch but I now see that with the red and blue little squares I've come a cropper.

I have twelve of each big square colour, six with red and six with blue, if that makes sense. Is there a way of having it so it appeals to my sense of everything's got to be in order or am I going to have to jumble the whole lot up and not enjoy the rest of the process?

Sewing Machines / Janome MC4900 Thread catching
« on: February 16, 2020, 11:03:02 AM »
A few weeks ago my machine jammed up so I cleaned out the fluff from the bobbin area. There was quite a lot, hadn't been done for a while  :|. That solved the problem and away I went again, quite happy. Last week the same thing happened so I cleaned out the fluff, that didn't do the trick. I've tried many times and have even taken the bottom off as much as I can to get at anything else; I've re threaded just in case - no luck.

The upper thread is catching on the hook race (I think - the silver bit that holds the bobbin) when I'm trying to pick up the bobbin thread.

It was serviced less than a year ago so I'm hoping I can fix this myself as it's difficult for me to get to the repair shop. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try next?

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Scotland
« on: February 16, 2020, 10:52:55 AM »
Hello, I was introduced to this forum by my good friend Judy  :). I live in Scotland and mostly enjoy doing patchwork. The quilting is more of a chore that needs to be endured  ;)

I have a problem with my sewing machine so I'm going to head off to that department in the hope that I'll be able to fix it myself ...
