Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Work in Progress
« on: November 01, 2018, 12:31:40 PM »
Here is my latest quilt top. It is work in progress, but at least there is some progress being made  :D
I know one of the blocks is a bit skew - wiffy but that will be fixed before the double border goes on.
It is a thank you present for a friend....... if it fulfills its promise  ;)  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

All batiks are from Doughty's ( bought at FOQ ) and the pattern is by Lynne Edwards  :)

I am fed up! By the time i have done all my chores for the day, I have no energy left to do any sewing or felting :(
I used to craft in the evenings, but I'm worn out by 7pm now :(
Sooo...... this weekend, or the whole of Saturday and Sunday, I am going to closet myself away in the workshop. I am determined to make headway with 2 quilting and 3 felting projects..................... wonder if I will??? -<

No more excuses, this part of the board has been languishing in apathy for too long ( apart from a hardy bunch of BOMers )
Time to get regalvanised!
What are you all going to make / making this autumn / winter? Pattern, dimensions, colours, fabrics?
Please don't be shy, you'll inspire others and hopefully some lightsiders might even give us a whirl  :ninja:

Me? ( I hear you ask ) well........ great changes are afoot ...... I have decided to give multitasking a go!
I am still working on my Fancy Forest Quilt ( don't know why, it's a bu**er ) then I have started a quilt for a friend; next I am going to make some lavender bags for the charity shop and finally, I'm going to begin another Elizabeth Hartman pattern.......Awesome Ocean.
Hopefully, there will always be something I feel like working on.
Hitherto I have always done one project at a time," from cradle to grave" but when I get stuck or fed up, I have nowhere to go, so, wish me luck with my new pathway  ;)

Right.....your challenge........as Jo Brand would say on GBBO ES......"Show us your makes"!!!!!!!!!
Don't let the Darkside die  :S

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Splitting seams
« on: October 04, 2018, 15:48:41 PM »
I have noticed that on 3 of my established ( ie. made some time ago ) quilts, some seams are coming undone  :'(
Is it because I tried to use a scant 1/4" seam? The quilts are all made from proper ( not Aldi / Lidl ;) ) quilting cotton fabrics and the thread is ok.
Any ideas why this could be happening?
Someone suggested shortening the stitch length, what length do you use please?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / My Visit to FOQ
« on: August 14, 2018, 13:22:13 PM »
I went to the FOQ for the first time last Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling on top form and so didn't manage a full day on either day :(
Thursday I spent looking at the quilts, very inspiring. I'm not so fond of the art quilts, wholequilts, nor ones containing lots of applique but there is no denying that the makers are very gifted.
I loved the traditional, modern and pictorial quilts and found the accuracy overwhelming  :D
The Tentmakers of Cairo and the 1718 quilt were added draws.
On Friday, I was not well enough to stay beyond 2.30pm but managed to cram in quite a bit of browsing and shopping......£180 with Doughtys and another £30 elsewhere  :| :|
I bought lots of batiks, extra wide backing, plain cottons and threads for a new project to be started soon...also some bits and bobs from the haberdashery stalls........ not the ruler unfortunately  -<
I was lucky enough to meet up with some lovely people.....Pearl, Twopence,Jobunnie. Sandra ( and daughter ) Lincoln Hobbit, DeafOldBat, StitchinTime, and of course Iminei ( whom I have met twice before  ;) ).... apologies to anyone I may have missed out - it's difficult when people have board / proper names  -<
The Festival wasn't as crowded as I'd expected and there were plenty of seats, although not in the coffee areas. People were generally polite and friendly but there were lots of wheelchairs, pushchairs, buggies to take account of.
The Premier Inn was good as were the 2 restaurants we went to in the evenings.
All in all it was a very memorable weekend... pity it'll probably be a one off but there you go  :toast:

Today i sewed together the second quadrant of my Fancy Forest Quilt. I measured, compared and sewed.....the section was too long to match with it's neighbour :( No panic....I took it apart, remeasured, realised where I'd gone wrong, re configured and sewed.......too long  :'( No matter,, I redid the whole process ( sewing in a hedgehog upside down was not intentional  :| ) This time I reread the pattern, ticked as I went, pinned and compared... sewed..........too bl***y long!!!!!!
I'm glad Elizabeth Hartman is safely across the pond, or I would stick FF somewhere very uncomfortable... especially as it would be too long to fit!!!
I've put it away until next week, but am wondering why I'm spending a fortune on going to the FOQ when I'm obviously not cut out for this Darkside lark at all!!!!!!!!
Here's my badge ( if I had one ) I resign!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Getting Excited
« on: August 05, 2018, 11:19:25 AM »
I'm getting excited about my first ( and probably last as it's cost me an arm and a leg ) visit to the FOQ.
I'm a bit worried about getting from the bus stop at the airport ( bus terminal stop G ) to the hotel PI ( Northway NEC ) but if it's too far to walk I expect there'll be a taxi  -<
I'm trying to decide what I need to buy, what I need to wear, what I need to take and how to split my time between the quilts and shopping. Is anyone else staying at the PI ( apart from myself and Iminei )? What's the best time to get to the NEC ( I've heard there are queues first thing)?
Now.......will I need a shopping bag???  :D

In the wardrobe / I need advice
« on: June 27, 2018, 14:15:13 PM »
I have put a post in "Sewing Professionally" but it has just occurred to me that some of you accomplished seamstresses, although not necessarily professionals, could point me the way forward. Please look at my post as it has a pic. to illustrate my dilemma.... and I know you like pics  :D Thanks  <3

Sewing Professionally / I need professional help
« on: June 26, 2018, 17:52:52 PM »
I have decided that I have one specific top which I would like to standardise to wearing. It fits well and apart from needing to be 2" longer, the original top ( from FatFace ) could be used as a template. I would like to commission several of these tops ( up to a dozen if the workmanship was ok ) It is 100% cotton..
Now, I looked up local dressmakers and hit a big snag..... not only aren't there many, but they all either only do repairs and alterations or do bespoke bridal / occasionwear ( Posh Frock Shop  :o )
Any tips on finding someone suitable locally, or, alternatively, would anyone on here consider making one for me if I sent the top and fabric, with a view to making several more if everything went to plan?
I'll post a picture if anyone is interested.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Fancy Forest
« on: June 20, 2018, 14:12:42 PM »
Having been given the pattern for this quilt by @Iminei for Christmas, I've been bumbling along with it.
Finally, it has come together as a an entity....sort of.....
More tweaking to do and lots of finishing off, but you'll get the gist of things from the photos ( hopefully ). I'm quite pleased with how things are progressing

I have been trying to square off some 12" blocks. I have a 6.5" square ruler and cant work out how to do it( it's the only square ruler I have )
I consider myself ok at most aspects of p/q but for the life of me I have never got the hang of squaring blocks or cutting straight  :| @Iminei  gave me the above mentioned ruler, complete with sandpaper dots on to stop it moving....but.....they don't!! I ruined a whole fat eighth because it slipped
I cannot stand, bent over, for very long and often cut sitting down which doesn't help  :|
I think it'll be pre cuts from now on...but.....his doesn't help with squaring.........give me a foolproof method please  :ninja:

Having felt very iffy this morning ( I put it in the Today thread i think )  I decided this afternoon to go into the workshop and begin my Linus quilt ... yeah! I have cut out all the squares and hopefully before the day is out I will be able to have started the subcutting and the piecing ... ( where's the excited smiley @Francesca @Acorn  - I thought we were getting extras  -< )
My 2 colours are looking good and I know how I intend the finished blocks to look..ish  ;)
Back in there when I've watered the garden... onward and upward  <3

A Good Yarn / My latest love
« on: May 13, 2018, 11:43:23 AM »
Really must get back to The Dark Side... but... I can't help but keep adding to my teddy bear family   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I haven't ventured into the workshop since the end of January  :o
The weather has been gloomy and miserable and so have I...... but........no longer
While it's been so miserable I have snuggled indoors with my needle felting ( see attachment for the sort of things I make ) but, no more....... I have my Fancy Forest quilt to finish and my cushion cover to make, then lots of ideas spinning around my head ... hoorah  :D
I was going to have my machine serviced ( I can't clean it / defluff it myself as I can never get it back together again  :| ) but as I'm now raring to go there's no time  :sew:
I have 3 quilts I made ages ago to go to Linus and that'll free up space in the crate...so.....it's all systems go.....watch this space!! :ninja:
