2021 BOM Mystery Quiltalongathon / Block 6 - The AMETHYST Star
« on: August 28, 2021, 11:30:04 AM »
Welcome to
TSP's Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021
...

After the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it

The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought, as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds,
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

So this is the FINAL block of our
MysteryQuiltalongathon

The SIXTH Block of
2021 TSP's Mystery Quiltalongathon

Is the

The AMETHYST Star
The Amethyst Star

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre or FQ of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

The Sewing Places's
Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

Here are this years Project Linus Quilts ... The Theme was Animal.

Well Done Girls, in a year when Mojo Hunting was declared an Olympic Sport ... You produced fabulous Creations, Bravo!!!

Sheilago's Creation

Here is my ‘ Counting sheep’ quilt for PL. It is a scrappy quilt, but every block has a sheep somewhere and I even had a little bit of sheepy fleece to patch into the back :D. Hopefully it will help some wee person somewhere to doze off comfortably.

Louise S's Creation

I finished mine last summer but have put it in the wash and taken photos.
I ran out of the blue fabric so used offcuts to make a pattern on the back.

Ploshkin's Creation

I had started this for last year.  I completed the quilt top before I had to pack away for the builders and it has languished in a box ever since.  I didn't take any progress pics because the previous PL quilts have remained anonymous until after the poll but as progress pics have now been requested it can have an airing.  I don't know when I will get an opportunity to complete it but I will try and make it by the deadline.

I have 3 possibles for the backing, none of which are the original fabrics I got for this quilt waaaay before I actually started it.  That's how you get a stash!  :P

Starryfish's Creation

This is my first real quilt, I made it from Makower animal life fabrics. It's a QAYG effort and taught me a lot about accurate cutting and sewing!

I have a lot to learn!

Kenora's Creation

I haven't been able to find time to sew for the last month, but I thought I'd take a couple of photos of what my finished quilt should look like once it's done. I had great ideas for colour combinations in my head, but now I've laid it out on the bed - only the individual D9P blocks are sewn together, nothing else - I'm not so sure I like it, but it's too late now. -<

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I was intending to add an extra orange striped border in between the navy one and the outer turquoise chevron one, but it just didn't look right. The chevron border will also be mitred (if I can remember how to do it  :) ).The binding will probably be plain navy.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The backing fabric doesn't show up in the photo very well. It's a medium/light grey with a yellow feather design. It's much nicer in real life. :)

Twopence's Creation

Here it is then.

I used the Linus pattern for Courthouse Steps as that was what they asked for last year and just cut dinosaurs for the centre’s. The quilting was fairly simple as I stitched 1/4 inch round the centre panels and 1/4 inch in from the main seams joining the blocks before stitching the binding down on the front using blanket stitch.

Alterations Advice Please / Patching jeans ... yet again!
« on: May 16, 2021, 12:25:29 PM »
The other day (yet again) I fell over and to my dismay opened a small hole in the leg of my new (to me £6 in the charity) black jeans.

Now I know I have successfully patched jeans before but these seem to be a whole different animal.

It seems most jeans today have an inordinate amount of stretch to them ... unlike my last patched jeans, which being pretty old actually resembled denim ...

So I need to ask .. What / How / With what should I patch them ??

I have no material the same as the jeans and need to make it sort of invisible but was thinking about using black lame and patching a star that would catch the light just a lil ????

Also if I unpick the side seam as I did before, which stitch should I use to sew it up with ... being this silly stretch fabric?

Over to you Boffins!!!
