In the wardrobe / Re: Possibly a crazy/impossible alteration?

Are you doing that overlap the full length of the coat? Just wondering if trying to take out 2 inches per side between pockets and shoulders will create an odd "bunch" above the pocket. I guess a fish eye dart with sufficient head and tail could smooth it. If you have clips you could play around without damaging the fabric. Then decide whether to adjust or embrace the oversized look, if you don't find the bagginess impractical.

Sewalongs and Competitions / Re: 2024 Jeans Sew Along
« on: January 06, 2024, 19:40:49 PM »
@Ouryve I sewed the crestons up. Firstly using some hideous non stretch denim (grim colour and lightweight) with the slant pockets etc, to get the basic fit. I can see using this for chinos more than jeans. As I had some stretch demin in stash I made modifications for more normal jeans pockets, narrowed the legs etc and then sized down one size for that. So it worked as a good base pattern for starting. I do have a hankering to try the Anna Allen Helene pattern at some point in the future though.

Sewalongs and Competitions / Re: Ideas for 2024 contests?
« on: December 22, 2023, 08:39:58 AM »
As the colour of the year may not be that popular this, could it be a bonus challenge i.e. if you do any of the contests in that colour? Vote at year end? Anyone doing a full capsule in Peach Fuzz might be a worthy winner in my book. Like the "Sew New" category suggested and sports/Olympic theme. Only other thoughts I had would be  stash related one -could be pattern, fabric, wool etc. -you've had it for a while but not got round using it.  Second vague thought was something around learning about/showcasing machine functions we don't use much (ruffler feet, binders, obscure stitches etc).

If you like gathers into a straight yoke the the Merchant and Mills Omile is certainly an option with volume (I made it in light viscose to make sure it draped).

I like the square neck of the Jennifer Lauren Aisling too, and that gives the option of buttons or pullover and has cup sizes.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Ideas please. Velour party pants?
« on: October 20, 2023, 09:40:24 AM »
Think wide leg pull on trousers would look great. The weight and stretch of your fabric should help you decide on the pattern. The winslow culottes have a lot of fabric to pleat or gather at the waist for example, so a more fitted and then flared from the hip may be simpler. A quick google threw up the Style Arc Como looking wide-ish but not too bulky. I'm thinking about the practicality of sewing the velour over looks, as you'll know what you like, whether you EVER wear a tucked in top etc.

Lovely machine and cabinet. And you have had the satisfaction of a good defluff thrown in! I share your zigzagger pain - any I have spotted have gone for over £100, and that just seems insane.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Nightwear Patterns
« on: September 13, 2023, 14:49:44 PM »
Jennifer Lauren has a lounge set for wovens. I have also used the free Helen's closet orchard dress for a nightdress. I think her blog has some hacks for her other patterns (Arden plants, Ashton or Gilbert top) into sleepwear. For knits I've used a style arc dress Laura and a Jennifer Lauren dolman T pattern, and an Ottobre ponte trouser pattern (in a lighter weight knit - cue sweat emoji at the thought of ponte pjs). My nightwear rarely comes from a nightwear pattern.

I have failed every time to get twin stitch needles to work on my machines so just use the triple zig zag stitch for hemming. Not as neat a finish, but a lot less angst.

As this is about what you will wear, how about leave it plain but set a time limit  (6 to 12 months?). If in that time you don't find yourself reaching for it to wear, or even rejecting it because it feels too dull to you, then you have your answer. We all have different tastes and views on what makes us feel good.

@Diane I made the ITS Winterthur at the start of this year (dry wax cotton). The instructions are very comprehensive - over 100 steps to take you through it - so I managed to get a finished coat eithout too many issues.

Tech Know How / Re: Recommended books on pattern drafting?

Just for some info on plus size patterns. UK based indies that have a plus block are merchant and mills and sew me something. Overseas include cashmerette, muna and broad, itch to stitch, helens closet. There are more (e.g. style arc) but these ones do include pictures in either promotion or tester round ups of patterns on plus bodies. They may help you and your partner refine some of your work. Good luck.

Fantastic job, it looks beautiful. Also gives me hope for the 28k handcrank rusting in my parents garage that I have as a project for the winter

Other possibles for quilted jacket from indies are Helens Closet Wildwood, Sew me something Greta or Muna and Broad Grainger (size 40 inch bust is smallest size in the latter).

Patterns Discussion / Re: Style Arc patterns, is it just me?

I have made a few and vary the size and grade between sizes based on finished measurements given. Of the dresses did the Yvette recently and that was spot on for recommended size. Just finishing the Teddy top - sized down. All pattern pieces for that collar/facing came together perfectly. (If you ignore the written instructions and watch the tutorial). So I've had good experiences, but only from varying pattern by pattern.

No photos but this did kick me to finish some ill-advised "mom" jeans in horrible denim, which have already been ripped from relegation to gardening. Some ufos are there for very good reasons. They will move into the "salvage useful bits before binning" pile now.
