Vintage Machines / Charity shop finds
« on: March 19, 2018, 15:54:25 PM »
I found these two machines in a local charity shop. One of them is a Wheeler and Wilson hand crank machine. The other is a beautiful treadle (which I really, really don't want...much!!) It has no name that I could see though it has a reference number which I tried to photograph.
Does anyone have any information about them, please?

A Good Yarn / Re: casting on using the thumb method
« on: March 07, 2018, 19:10:18 PM »
I use the thumb method for most casting on, and find it easier to do, but it gives quite a tight first row and I knit very tightly anyway. However I'm currently knitting socks (4th pair nearly done!) and use the two needle method as it makes it looser and means I can actually wear the finished item. So I think it's a choice depending on what you're making. Deciding how much of a tail you need for the thumb method gets easier with practise - though it is more than annoying if you run out before you have the number of stitches you need. >:)

Block of the Month 2018 / Re: January's BOM
« on: January 08, 2018, 11:43:59 AM »
This is my first attempt at anything other than squares and oblongs and is a real mess. It looked easier than any of the others last year so I thought I'd try. Apparently not. So I'll have another go...

And the photo didn't attach...

I can't remember whose ideas these were but thank you both. Someone had made a quilt with loads of plus signs which I thought was lovely so had to be tried. Someone else mentioned having a white sheet attached to a wall to lay out possible designs. I've attached an old white fleece to the top drawer of my chest of drawers to do this. When not in use it rolls up and goes into the drawer. Plus signs still a work in progress but is very easy to see how it will look without crawling around on the floor which was former option. I'm only a dark side novice but now running happily down the slippery slope... :)

I have sent you a pm. Thanks.

I am interested, please, depending on price.

Burn test? To tell if there's man made fibre mixed in? How do you do that please?

Sewing Professionally / Alterations in Sheffield
« on: July 22, 2017, 07:31:21 AM »
My daughter has just contacted me to ask whether, if she can't find a dressmaker, I would be willing to alter a friend's bridesmaids dress for the wedding of a second friend. Despite having made 9 bridesmaids dresses for the weddings of my two daughters in the last three years I know that alterations are a whole different kettle of fish. So I'm not willing to try. However, she seems to be having difficulty finding someone who might be able to help (she lives in Sheffield) and I thought one of you lovely people just might be able to do something. No idea on timings or fabrics or anything but thought I could ask. Thanks.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Harris tweed

Thank you for all your ideas and memories. I didn't realise they made double width fabric so that makes things easier. I'm really looking forward to going.

I am currently trying to finish a pure wool knitted jacket to take with me so I should be prepared for the vagaries of the weather. Though, again, it's not really the temperature for it now.

Fun with Fabric / Harris tweed
« on: June 19, 2017, 16:08:37 PM »
In all this heat I'm lothe to even THINK about this. However, I shall be visiting Lewis in a couple of weeks and hope to treat myself to a bit of Lewis tweed fabric for a skirt. I've found that it is woven in 80 cm widths only so it will be have to be a 6/8 panelled skirt. Any ideas on patterns, anyone?

This is the baby machine. Incomplete, sadly and not sure where/how to get it fixed.
