Fun with Fabric / Re: Bamboo
« on: March 22, 2019, 11:33:00 AM »
I've not sewn with bamboo but I have knitted with it and it was beautiful, looked a bit like cotton.  Very soft with a lovely sheen.  DD had a nappy made out of bamboo and that was great as well.  Its a lovely fabric with anti-microbial/bacterial properties.  Haven't seen any fabric for sewing with though and be interested to hear what you think.

Elizabeth Ardern 5th Avenue

Love this perfume.  It reminds me of my nan.  She wanted Red Door by EA and I tried the 5th Avenue one when looking for it for her.

@datcat23   I'd forgotten about Reconstructing History; they have a men's pattern which might be good as a starting point and are downloadable.  Haven't made anything of theirs so can't vouch for them, but I have them marked as a source of interest!

Why not wear the bird top with your black skirt....I doubt anybody would even mention or ask you about it. What does it really matter anyway,

Oh my, I am hyperventilating at the thought, but then I am a bit matchy-matchy  0_0 ;) :P

If you include the Danes as viking then yes they did, but modern Denmark/Jutland peninsula isn't Northern Scandinavia.

Interesting, I thought they were all lumped in as one! I watch and loved the Last Kingdom and did loads of reading up on Vikings (and because I keep trying to persuade the kids we need to go to The Jorvik Centre) and everthing seemed to put all the scandinavian invaders under the same umbrella as Vikings!  My new thing learned for the day!

whilst the Vikings from northern Scandinavia came to the north east (and parts of Scotland and Ireland).

The Viking reach was far more extensive that that and covered pretty much half of England, including East Anglia, right down to The Thames, I believe, and was part of the Treaty signed by Guthrum and King Alfred, giving Guthrum control of these areas (later known as Danelaw).  The last Viking invasion was 1066 so definitely before the 12th Century.  Maybe her son is just determined to be a Viking!

Have a look at this video.  You can see what women wore in 12th century and you also get a peek of a man's costume.

If you google bliaut pattern, you will get quite a few come up and is probably something you can do yourself as it was very simple tailoring in those days, no complicated shapes!

Looking forward to seeing the end result!

I love Bemberg lining, it drapes beautifully and feels great on the skin.

Exactly what I was going to say!

Patterns Discussion / Re: Simplicity 1566 what sort of elastic?
« on: March 01, 2019, 12:50:34 PM »
@sewingj  yes.  it is left open at the sides, where a button is sewn on each side so you can tighten the elastic and hold it on the button.  I think a lot of elasticated trousers for little ones have this now, might be worth a look so you can visualise it.

An alternative is buttonhole elastic which can be let out, or in, depending on weight.

I'd definitely consider buttonhole elastic on baby/toddler trousers.  DS1 was a skinny thing and everything fell down on him and DD as well. Buttonhole elastic was a god send!

I know some of the girls have bought embellished elaborate dresses so ours could easily be shadowed.

The important thing is that your daughter feels comfortable in what she is wearing.  It doesn't matter what the others wear or how embellished their dresses are if that is not what she likes.  My daughter hates anything over the top and she would always go for something plain rather than full of bling.  If she is comfortable, she will feel beautiful and if she feels beautiful, it will show.  Personally, I'm not a fan of satin either.  It can easily look cheap.

I second Brenda's suggestion of a crepe.

Technical Help / Re: Using Swedish Tracing Paper
« on: February 25, 2019, 11:18:13 AM »
Answering myself.
Did what I should have done in the first place and checked on the www.creative-industry.co.uk website.
Yes you can sew it - treat like cotton fabric.

Hi Sue,

Have only just seen this.  I use Swedish Tracing paper and love it for toiles.  IMO its not as robust as cotton fabric but is perfectly fine for toiles, I have even sewn a zip into it.

I'd been looking at the dress in that squirrel fabric and I love the peacock feather one as well!
