In the wardrobe / Re: McCalls 6963

I made that once in non drapy cotton jersey - terrible idea, the neck didn't work at all. Worn once then consigned to scrap bin. I have other cowl necks that work well. Maybe in the right fabric but once bitten...

There's a good choice on EBay around that price. I bought some fat quarters there a while back, lovely quality and colours. Mine was more substantial than normal quilting cotton and virtually the same on both sides. I have a notebook cover I made from it and the fabric has softened somewhat even without washing. I think it would make a striking dress as long as you're not looking for drape.

I like Swedish tracing paper, but it is quite pricey.

Me too. Even pricier with postage to Ireland but worth it imo. I've given up trying cheaper alternatives for them to sit gathering dust in the corner of my sewing room  :(.

I've just used this stuff to print a pdf pattern using my 5 year old Canon inkjet. Nice quality - all the sheets went through beautifully in one go, no sticking or mangling. You get 500 sheets so it works out cheaper than Ryman's if you're a magpie for pdf patterns  ;). And the paper's fine enough to use a glue stick which also reduces bulk.

A bit of a 'do' / Re: Nice Bow Tie Tutorial
« on: May 02, 2019, 18:20:01 PM »
@Vezelay, the bow tie is really nice, but on this one, I decided to do a simple Velcro fastening.  I'd be interested to know which Ebay shop you used for your fastenings, I couldn't find anything suitable for a little boy.

I'm sure Velcro is best for a young child's version. Mine was for a 22 year old and came from China as I wasn't in a hurry - that seller doesn't do them at the moment. Just put "bow tie hardware" or bow tie clips" into EBay search and you'll find loads of the three piece adjustable ones as demo'd in the video.

Great, thanks @b15erk. Bow tie has been on my to do list for a while (Xmas gifts) so no excuse now. I've dug out the hardware I bought last year from EBay - £1 for 5 sets. Nice quick make :).

Fun with Fabric / Re: Looking for lightweight 100% cotton jersey
« on: April 23, 2019, 23:34:41 PM »
I'm with you on the 100% cotton for sleepwear @sewingj . Nothing like it for comfort. There's some on eBay looks ok if you search. The lightweight can be thin and stretch but you might consider interlock.

If you're stuck Ive bought 100% cotton jersey PJ's online from M&S.

There's the Grainline Tamarack Jacket  which is designed for quilted fabric. Worth a look anyway. Says it's for Advanced Beginners.

I dont like the big band on the bottom, I’ve made the Lisbon cardigan with that neckline, it’s easy to construct but I’m not a fan

This has a bomber jacket collar @Efemera - I don't think the Lisbon cardigan has. I've made a couple of bomber jackets and a couple of Toaster 1's which have a similar wide waist and sleeve bands and get lots of compliments so I reckon a mash up could work.

@BrendaP Good point - an extra snap fastener wouldn't go amiss.

It's this, the Monarch jacket which looks like a cross between a bomber jacket and a cardi. There's 15% off if you subscribe to the Indiesew newsletter. This one's right up my street - a quick, easy make that looks super-comfortable and versatile. When I recover from my upcoming second cataract op and my elbow wire removal surgery I'm definitely making a couple of these!

WAW, if you can't find the supplies you need you could always buy one of these from Sewing Machines Direct HERE. It's £25 + £4 postage to Ireland.

The £15 one I bought from Amazon isn't available any more but it's a more basic model.

Technical Help / Re: Help - zip repair, replace or ditch?

As Radiofan says, you can just buy a replacement zipper bottom stop as seen here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZIP-ZIPPER-BOTTOM-STOP-STOPPER-REPAIR-IN-5-FINISHES-SIZES-3-5-8-10-UK-/292054607511 and crimp it on. I've done this with top stops and it was easy enough.
