The Show Must Go On / Re: Alice in Wonderland Pattern

McCall's site has it for sale cheap right now. With the exorbitant shipping to you you'd pay just a few dollars more than the regular price. Pricey, but an option.

I'm also interested.

While we wait for your review,  :drink: , here's a link to the "look inside" page at Amazon for the above book.

BurdaStyle has online courses and there is one for sewing and drafting a workout collection, 7 pieces. PDF slopers are included. The instructor is personable. I bought the course. I watched some of it but got no further.

There is a free mini course for the running tank, sloper included, that may be of interest.

A lot of the reviews on the Fehr Trade book that I've seen are less than flattering. Generally that it's not well organized and sizing can be off.

Looking forward to your reviews.

These are great @Iminei .  I luv, luv, luv Disappearing 9 Patch. Rivaled only by Just Can't Cut It, Drunkard's Path and those annoying but simple 1600 Race strip quilts.

Do the tute for the D9P, so I won't be tempted to. I'll try to do one for JCCI. But that'll be late Summer at best. They are both excellent for beginner "I can't possibly quilt" people. And the quilting can be super simple as well. I do stitch near the ditch. Just not so good at getting in the ditch. But diagonals across the quilt work well too.

Im, a lot of the Modern quilts are super simple free motion. Often they are wobbly lines only going in one direction, up/down or side to side. Easy peasy. Or straight lines, edge to edge, going all helter-skelter. Works well in my eyes.

Do you want we have a Disappearing 9 Patch thread? Or just add on here? I'll try to take pics of some of mine, which look NOTHING like the ones Iminei has done. I never thought of just rearranging the 4 pieces sub cut from a big block back into a stand alone block and using sashing between. Mostly because I think I've only used sashing on one quilt.  ;)

Vintage Machines / Re: It's time to let them go
« on: March 07, 2019, 23:09:42 PM »
Barny, I'm sorry to hear that you are not well. It's hard to come to the realization that we need to part with some of our beloved toys and tools, but I commend you for doing it on your terms. There is a bit of joy in knowing that they will continue to be loved and admired.

Take care.  :flower:

Sewing Machines / Re: Now I know why I never touch my machine
« on: March 07, 2019, 22:54:44 PM »
Maybe set up a screen and Stitches can sit behind it, gently giving encouragement?

Or. Get out the manual Woman. Read it, like a book or magazine. Take it to the machine and read it again, slowly, touching the parts as it tells you about them. Then, get out some fabrics, basic stuff, quilt cotton scraps are good. Sew. Practice stitches, stitch lengths, and dare I suggest it, needle positions. Put feet on, take them off. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I was terrified of my newest machine, my first ever computerized and with an embroidery module to boot. I took my time, did what I suggested above and over the course of a week or so we got to know each other. I also keep the manual handy and use it often.

Ninety percent of my sewing is done with the default straight stitch and basic foot. It would be useful if you could just get comfortable with the zigzag too.

I really like Fancy Tiger Crafts. They have some courses on Creativebug that I enjoyed watching.

Here's a link to the book with a bunch of photos. No Linky @Renegade Sewist   there are a couple of errata notations on the bottom of that page. Left out the collar on the jacket.

Looking forward to seeing your quilt.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: Furnishing a new sewing room

If it's not the brand you dislike, you can order online. I found them really great for their mod-ability - hard to find that with other furniture stores.

I can't understand why someone wouldn't shop at IKEA though personally. I don't think I've ever had the luxury to NOT shop there for furniture! (Most of our home is IKEA).

@Francesca , some people do not shop with them due to their use of political prisoners as slave/ forced labor as recently as the 80's.

Only a gew more days to go...... Where are all the selfless people?  :vintage:

Haven't seen any around here.  :ninja:

I've determined that I am neither selfless, nor am I sewing. As of last Saturday it's been a full year of no sewing. At this point motivation and interest have almost completely evaporated. sigh...

Is there a contest for March? If so what is it?
I try to play along when the parameters are something within what I might sew anyway.

@SewRuthieSews ,look here for the full list, of monthly and longer ones. First post.

March is sewing for the little ones, including garments for your pets or the 18" dolls and over March & April is the extended contest, sewing for men (clothes).

Yellow is also a traditional color for the centers. It represents a welcoming light at the window. US tradition has the blocks half light/half dark.

OMG to the color washed Log Cabin quilts. I'n never seen those before.  :S

I'll need to watch from the wings. March is already overbooked.  :S

You all are a funny lot.  0_0

I've made a start at doing something with The UFO Collection. I bought a 20 yard roll of 90" wide low loft cotton quilt batting this week. It's rather nice stuff. It was such a good sale; 70 % off the single by the yard price by buying it prepacked this way.

So no excuse not to finish some of these tops. I'm not sure if Lightsiders know about quilts. There are two parts to a quilt and two finishes. First you make and finish the top. Then, at some point, sooner or later, you turn it into a finished quilt. See, the tops really aren't UFO's to Darksiders. And having a stack of them in a cupboard is useful, sort of an instant quilt kit. Almost like having money in the bank. Cough.

  • 1600 (Jelly Roll Race) Hallowe'en top done.
  • D9P throw Hallowe'en top done.
  • Drunkard's Path throw orange & black Hallowe'en top. Blocks almost all together.
  • DP throw Hallowe'en fabric top half done.
  • Just Can't Cut It quilt Hallowe'en top & all basted. Just need to quilt & bind.
  • Whack a Stack Star quilt top done.
  • Flip & Sew Lap quilt Christmas. Half done.

See why I bought so much batting? I have the backing for several of these and binding made as well for some. And actually, there are at least two or three more. Then the quilts in my head.....

Anyone else notice that most of the UFO lists and now finished items are quilts?  :)

That's great @Pearl ! I love doing Disappearing 9 Patch for some reason. Soothing and rather simple to piece, a little precision cutting (whack whack  :D), rearrange to your liking and sew them back together. The red & black are quite dramatic. Does the Son like it?

It's why I never "Like" anything, lol.
Oh sure, that's your story....

...really though? Upper right,red/pink box? Are you desktop or another contraption?

I really like that we have a like button.  :flower:
