House Beautiful / Covering camper van bench seat pads
« on: April 17, 2019, 14:16:33 PM »
Hi everyone, I need some advice on the type of fabric to use to cover 2 large memory foam seat pads for a camper van. We will be sleeping on these cushions as well as sitting, hence the memory foam, for greater comfort. The fabric needs to be hard-wearing, totally non-stretch (old machine), and preferably machine washable. I just don’t know what to search for, or what weight I need. I’m an inexperienced sewer, so don’t know if some fabrics are harder to work with and/or fit onto the pads, and best avoided. Any thoughts?

Embroidery and Embellishment / Mending a jersey skirt
« on: February 10, 2019, 21:52:21 PM »
I wore my lovely new silky, patterned, jersey skirt once, and a gust of wind blew it against a car, where it caught on something sharp underneath and ripped. I’ve got a raggedy-edged hole about 4cm across on the front of the skirt, about 15cm above the hem. I have thought about shortening the skirt, as it would still be plenty long enough for me, but would really like to mend it. Is it possible to hand-sew a mend in this type of fabric? If not, can someone recommend a good skirt-shortening tutorial? It will have to be by hand, because my vintage machine only does straight stitches, so I can’t use it on jersey. Plus there’s a lot of fabric in it and I’m a beginner, so I could make a mess of either fix with very little encouragement.  :)

Hi, I'm new... / Hello, I’m new on this site
« on: February 10, 2019, 21:39:48 PM »
I’m an almost complete beginner. I have inherited a beautiful old Singer machine from my aunt, and as it is hand-cranked it doesn’t scare me like my mother’s old electric one did. So I'm keen to teach myself a few skills. I have followed a couple of easy projects from Pinterest, but keep managing to turn promising ones into a mess. I expect that’s par for the course though, so I’m not daunted. My machine only does straight stitches, so I won’t be doing fancy stuff.
