3 mtrs each patterned @ 112cms wide plain @ 146cms wife

Colour is hard to capture but nice muted lilac/purple/more on the pinkish end of the spectrum I guess but difficult to photograph

Cotton unused obviously

I bought it from a quilting shop because I liked it but I know I’ll never make it up so would rather it go to someone who will

A Good Yarn / Weight of balls of wool question
« on: June 22, 2018, 05:52:15 AM »
Hello everybody

I want to make a shawl for a friends expected grandchild one I first made more than 40 years ago and made lots of times since however when I dug out the very old pattern it just says 14 balls (3 ply)

I can’t remember if back in the day a ‘ball’ of wool was an ounce? Which would probably equate to 25g in today’s weight? Am I correct in my assumption nowhere in the pattern does it give the weight of the ‘ball’

As you will know I need to buy enough to complete it to guarantee same shade numbers

Thanks in advance for any knowledge for this old lady who can’t remember  :S

Fun with Fabric / Holiday sewing ideas wanted
« on: June 08, 2018, 21:36:59 PM »
Brain cells required mine have gone into hiding can I use yours please ladies and gents

We are off camping at the end of the month it will be walking and beach mostly and evenings at the tent. I always take some hand sewing with me something small for the beach and something more challenging for the tent last year it was paper piecing patchwork for the beach and Manx quilting cushion covers for the tent evenings and I also hand sewed a skirt and a top
I can probably find a garment to prepare beforehand but need some ideas for the small hand sewing project or even some different ideas for the tent

My head is currently too full of the beach skirt the walking trousers and the three tops I intend to finish before we go to think about what to take

Ideas needed please

What lies beneath... / Swimsuit cups
« on: March 20, 2018, 15:57:33 PM »
I am soon going to make a swimsuit for myself, well more of a top and skirted bottoms, the pattern says I need cups - fair enough I do like a bit of support - but what sort of cups? it doesn't specify, and would they just simply be my bra cup size?

Thanks in advance
I am making view B of Butterick 5795

Oh and if there is any advice on making a swimsuit I am happy to recieve it, after all I can't really make a toile with the same fabric, so not sure about sizing, for example swimsuits are usually snug, can I assume that if I chose a size from the back of the envelope that it will be right?

A Good Yarn / casting on using the thumb method
« on: March 05, 2018, 12:04:26 PM »
I can do it, easily, but I dislike it intensely, especially trying to judge the amount of yarn needed to so it and knit the first row which is always a faff to me, whereas casting on with needles seems so simple by comparison

Can anyone tell me why/if one method is better than the other?
I've been a knitter since I was a child, and can do just about anything, my current project - cardigan for hubby - requires cast on with thumb, as I only have one more sleeve to do your replies won't help this project, but I am thinking in future if it says this I will ignore it what I don't know is if that will make any difference.

This is what I'm making

Sewing Professionally / This has been asked before but I can't find it
« on: February 24, 2018, 20:37:47 PM »
Or...........I might be thinking of the old sewing forum, because I am sure it was a sticky and about sewing professionally, if anyone knows where I might find it please point me at it

Recently I have been thinking of advertising locally for dressmaking, alterations and repair customers, I have some already, who return time and time again, which has been all I needed, but last year I 'retired' from my professional life, mostly to free up some time to look after my dad, but I now find myself wanting to expand this into more of a business and tout for customers - I have lots of ideas where I might do this but my questions are......

The dreaded insurance question, not about needing it but where is the best place to get from? Up to now I have been covered by insurance for the market if I put it through their invoicing system, but this also means they take 8% for that, not that I mind that whilst doing so little, but wondering if I now need to put in place something for myself

The next question, which I have seen before, is about charges. I am aware  that there are lots of influencing factors so this is my bit of research it's not that I will charge the same (especially in these parts) but I need a starting point from which to work it out.

I already have cover for people coming into my home/property for business purposes because I used to see clients here in my other life.

I am not expecting folk who do this to tell the world what they charge/earn necessarily, but a ball park figure would do, if you wanted to help me out by being more specific, you could pm me if you wanted to.

All my machines and other sewing bits and bobs are insured although for personal use not business so I am guessing I have to look at that as well

Any advice/information would be gratefully received as part of my research and planning

Patterns Discussion / Pattern search
« on: November 17, 2017, 17:47:22 PM »
Hi everyone
I'm after a pattern with rouching across the tummy area, doesn't really matter on overall style at this stage as it will probably be a pattern hack jobby anyway
Any suggestions welcomed as my search hasn't turned up anything

A Good Yarn / I've been reading the posts here........
« on: October 08, 2017, 16:29:13 PM »
I have completely missed this area of TSP but then again knitting and crochet is a winter thing for me, to sit on those dark evenings watching the box (if I can find anything to watch) it is good for me because it keeps me still.
I have just started knitting a cardigan for DH, although I still have a sweater to finish that I put away in the spring - when I don't want to knit anymore nothing will induce me to do so.....I only need to finish of the top of one sleeve and sew it all together!  I started knitting in school, and remember knitting my first baby cardigan for an expected new cousin at the age of 7
I also love to crochet, for this I am self taught, I learned the very basics as a child, but about 10 years ago bought myself a book with all the different crochet stitches in it, found a pattern and bobs yer uncle - I can now make all sorts of things, I have a pattern for a lacy cardi for me which shall be this winters crochet pattern.
So I shall be visiting this part of the Sewing Place a bit more often through the coming months  :)
When I started DH's cardi last night, he was looking at the pattern, he asked me if I ever to a tension square, when I said no he said 'it says here that you should' so I did one, gave it to him to measure, and it was perfect, and I said 'that's why I don't do a tension square unless it's an unusual yarn which isn't necessarily the recommended one for the pattern, because my knitting tension is usually ok'  :)

What lies beneath... / fitting bra cups to RTW dress
« on: September 15, 2017, 20:42:31 PM »
Hello all, not sure if this is the correct place to post, if not please move mods

Our dance teachers wife has asked if I can put bra cups into two dresses that she has but cannot wear because of no cups, she is a size E cup so needs the support. I have read up and watched tutorials on how to do this and I have sent for some bra cups, however........
If any of you wonderful people have tips on doing this I would be eternally grateful for any advice - the dresses in question are lacey, but not expensive or high quality.
Thanks in advance
JP

Publications / La maison Victor
« on: July 21, 2017, 16:18:12 PM »
A new sewing magazine I bought the first issue today
Verdict?
OK and good for beginners (although it claims 'beginners to advanced')
Selection of clothing and household items
Says ' sew dresses for every shape and size' for this read 'model shape and size'
Has 8 patterns included but all need to be traced off and makes my eyes hurt just looking at the jumble of lines
Good instructions for projects
Sizes are American but that's not so unusual these days and this is made clear
Has knitting and other crafts in it
Has menswear! Unusual and welcome
Not littered with loads of adverts
No sewing talk or articles
Not sure that I will be buying issue number 2 unless I am particularly interested in something on the cover but given the pattern style I would probably try to find the item elsewhere
Anyone else seen it?

I'm still searching for that elusive magazine for advanced sewing techniques and articles maybe TSP should publish one with contributions from our lovely and amazing members  :D

Embroidery and Embellishment / Hand sewn garments
« on: May 27, 2017, 12:18:26 PM »
When I was on holiday last summer I hand sewed two skirts and a top. It wasn't planned but found myself needing a sewing fix. I went to a local sewing shop and got the bits I needed.
After measuring and cutting out using ideas from things I had made before and therefore comfortable with trying I used backstitch for the seams and then folded the seam edges under and used a running stitch so that raw edges were enclosed. Did hemming and a simple elasticated waist in a casing so not anything complicated.
To make sure I did straight seams I measured seam allowance and drew a line with a pencil and followed that. The skirts were panels to give some volume and flow to the bottom and the top was a simple back and front with longer shoulders to form something like a capped sleeve not too much shaping as also had a,cowl neck.
I wore the top and one of the skirts to a wedding. I enjoy hand sewing but rarely get the time to do it on this scale so it was wonderfully therapeutic.
I am in the process of choosing some fabrics and plan cutting out some items before I go this year so that I can do it again.
We go camping so taking my machine isn't easy well it is but having correct height table and chair isn't. I shall post pics  :thread:

A bit of a 'do' / Wedding dress alterations
« on: May 24, 2017, 20:12:48 PM »
Hi everyone
I'm not sure why I keep saying yes, but altering a wedding dress seems to come my way quite often - and although I sometimes think 'Oh for goodness sake! I'd rather make one from scratch than alter someone else's' I usually find I quite enjoy it, perhaps that's because it means so much to the bride? who are usually so happy about how different it feels when it fits better/is the right length and so on.
The latest one is here:  https://www.wed2b.co.uk/arlington
It is a beautiful dress, looks amazing on the lady in question and her chosen shoes are to die for.
The back needs attention, it fits well in the front, but she has a narrow back so it gapes she also needs way of support for the bust because of the open back she cannot wear an ordinary bra.
She brought to the fitting a longline bra which fastened just above the waist, it still shows, but I undid it and pinned it to the edge of the bottom back that meets the skirt and it worked in that she felt the support to the boobies was enough, and it slightly pulled the bottom back in and felt better on the waist. I had her moving about and it seemed to do the trick, so I will secure it and get her back for a fitting. I need to do something about the top back section yet.
I also got her to try on a tiered petticoat that I use on my dress form when making 50's style dresses to see the effect and the dress was transformed and she loved it.
It really is one of my favourite dresses so far, and not much work required, or at least not one that you have to take apart several layers, nor does it need hemming  - result! I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi, I'm new... / It's good to be home
« on: May 23, 2017, 20:45:45 PM »
You know what it's like when you have been away for a while, and probably had a nice time, but to get back home, to the familiar, friendly, wonderful place you call home is really, really nice - well that's what it feels like to become a member here!
I was a TSF'er and missed it terribly when it was lost, so I was over the moon to find The Sewing Place. I am looking forward to catching up with everyone's news and hopefully share a bit of my own.
I have been ridiculously busy for the last 18 months, so not much sewing done, but because sewing feeds my soul I knew I had to do something to remedy that, so I have given up some of the things that were keeping me away from sewing and am getting to know my new sewing machine and my sewing room once again. And now I have found TSP I feel better already
So glad to see so many friendly faces - I have missed you.
