Vintage Machines / Re: Guess what I have part II

Thats not too bad @Bill!
I run a workshop entitled 'get to know your sewing machine' and the ones that come in are usually worse than that! Everyone has to clean and oil their machines before they start, and I give a new packet of needles to the one with the most fluff and grot!

Here @Bill

This lady is the font of all knowledge regarding vintage machines.  I had a 201K some years ago, and wished I hadn't sold it. It was operated by a knee mechanism, which did actually make my leg quite sore using it.  I wish I had the knowledge to make into a foot pedal operated machine, but didn't, so flogged it. It was the most perfect straight stitcher ever!

With a house move (potentially!) I have decided to get shot of all the its and bits we all hang on to, but have enough Fat Quarters and a few eighths to make a couple of quilts for the Linus Project (small ones!).  I have spent this morning during our power cut to cut out the shapes, and will start stitching later on.  I like to have project on the go, but there is no time line for this!  I like to back my quilts with a brushed cotton sheet as it's really cosy.  I am a tight wotsit, and really don't like paying for proper 'quilting' size backing fabric as it's seriously expensive!

Thanks too for the download/link - very informative.  I had heard a rumour that she used a Sweet Sixteen long arm quilter, and indeed, she does! I did wonder how she sewed it!

It's always good to have a re-read!

I have had good luck selling on Facebook Market Place.  You will, of course, get the usual dose of scammers, sometimes I play along, just to waste their time, and sometimes I dont - but they all come out of the woodwork within an hour of the ad going live.  I have sold a couple of machines on there, the purchasers have come to collect/look at machine, and usually pay cash - there is no one taking a cut of your money like eBay!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/189544817106077 - this is a Bernina UK Sale or Swap group, might be worth joining (lots of useful info on there as well!).  I had interest on my machine on there, and a lady is coming to see/buy on Sunday morning.

I have thought long and hard about the sale of mine, but as others have said, I will have the money rather than having it sitting there doing nothing whilst I prefer to use the other machine!

Good luck with however you choose to sell!

I can highly recommend this - saw it with a group of sewing friends at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. We have not one religious bone between us, but the imagination and skill levels were second to none!

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Bernina B540 for sale £1400

Hello all.  I have given myself a stern talking to and telling off regarding sewing machines.  Bearing in mind I do Patchwork, quilting and textile art (mainly free motion stitching), and have slowly come to realise I only use the straight stitch function and zig zag, this machine is purely wasted on me!  I bought it from Sewing Machine World Online (sewing machine steve) in June 2022.  It comes with the full 'Barbie' wardrobe of accessories, and the following extras:
Straight stitch plate
4 extra bobbins (one has gone walkabout)
No.15 free motion foot
No.97 1/4" piecing foot
No.39C transparent embroidery foot
No.10 Toptstitch/stitch in the ditch foot
There is also an acrylic insert for a Horn elements table if required.
I have all the original packaging and has been registered with Bernina for their 7 year warranty.

And.......oh boy!  Have I had some interesting scams from Facebook marketplace!

Such a shame, I have used them several times as well, excellent postal service.  We have a bricks and mortar 'sewing' shop near us, which I try and support as much as I can, but, I have to say (hides behind hands) they are terribly expensive for 'branded' goods.  It's a really difficult market I'm sure, and I really didn't know that Amazon didn't pay up that quickly.

Here goes with my four pennorth!
What thread are you using?
What size/type needle are you using?
Has the fabric been doubled over?
Has it been threaded properly, top & bottom?
I only ask as I teach these things, & it’s usually something simple that is causing a little issue!

The foot pressure might be an answer, tension may be a bit tricksy…I have several elderly Singers & the tension differs on every one.  I prefer my 1889 Singer for topstitching over anything!

OOOOH!@Kitten I'm soooo glad you mentioned Coopers, - I was wracking my brains trying to think of the name!  Well done you!

@Celia - I am a secret enabler!  I have been hankering after the Jack for a while, I tend to do a lot of free motion stitching, which apparently these are particularly good at, as you can adjust the width of the free motion zig zag with your knee!  Right up my street.  Only problem being it would have to go upstairs, and a devil of a job that would be!

Singer made an industrial that did both - the Singer 20U. They are quite sought after.
I’d like one of those too! Jack make a similar 20U, with a direct drive, which I am considering, pretty good price, which includes table etc.  nice & mechanical! How about these @Bill?

@Bill Sewing Machine World in King's Lynn have an second hand Juki for sale that can be shipped:
https://www.sewingmachineworld.co.uk/product/second-hand-juki-hzl-dx7/

I don't think you've tried a Juki yet.

(Steve, the owner of SMW, used to be on the previous incarnation of TSP and was very helpful.)

Steve is great, I recommend him to all my class attendees to have their machines serviced.  However, I have had one of these machines and it went back within a week.  Very flimsy, poor feet, badly made, not good at all.  The only Juki's (In my humble opinion) are the straight stitch only ones - Steve refers to these as 'Light Industrial as they take the same feet, bobbins, bobbin case as industrials - their free motion feet are seriously weighty works of art.  However, as @RenegadeSewistsays, an industrial would suit you down to the ground, and are pretty good price wise.  You could buy one of these, a second hand overlocker and probably have some change!
