Actually, I think a bit of a relaxed attitude towards your hobby (and therefore the qualtity of your sewing) is healthy. It makes you go ahead and sew! And wear the stuff! And enjoy! I tend to look more than I should at the things I did wrong in a garment... which, on the other hand, makes me improve. As I have improved over the last years, I shudder sometimes when even looking at cheap RTW... no, I certainly don't want it to look like that... A acquaintance of mine cut patterns and sewed like there is no tomorrow - no structure, no rules, wonky seam lines, seamallowances of different widths, slapdash sewing. But she liked and wore the stuff she sewed. She never got better and the stuff not always looked good, but that was just not the goal! So, I guess, for a hobby sewist, wonky seams once in a while are okay...
As a professional - . If I were to sell a pattern, I would make sure to make an excellent sample. If it were a garment, I would see that the garment fits the model. A bag: Nice fabric, good topstitching. Because selling something is showtime. But then, that's me. If the person(s) selling there patterns are fine with their sample, and the pattern sells, maybe they got good value for their money (time)? They'll get some customers, they'll frighten some away.

Morzel's Entry #1

This is an outfit for myself for this years goal - jogging!

I used non-stretch cotton sweatshirt fabric for the sweater, as I need something over the tshirt in winter. The fabrics are left overs from other projects. The pattern I used is my TNT selfdrafted sweater pattern. I altered the pattern for the colour blocking details. A bit of a challenge was the continous colour blocking line in the left sleeve - but I worked out well enough.
I used functional jersey for the leggings - a new sort of fabric for me. It has about 70-80% Stretch and was much easier to work with than expected. The leggings pattern is The Jalie Clara (#3887), which has a gusset and no CF seam. The pattern is very easy to sew up with good and simple instructions. Its just three pattern pieces... You could do a bit of colourblocking with this as well!

@Ann do you cut the strips on bias or grain?  The piping looks thick -what does your daughter use it for? (No, not curious... ) I have a Dritz tool which I really like to cut the seam allowance for the piping at exactly 1cm - this way the piping has the same SA as my garment fabric and I don't have to worry about anything.

The neckline makes me think of Sofia Loren - what lovely tshirts those are! I really like that neckline you drafted.

The coverstitch: I have good results since I changed to needles with a bigger eye - Schmetz has a 'black' needle for overlockers, which work really well. Together with a thin (120 Polyester) and good quality thread my machine can handle the speed with which the coverstitch has to get all those threads around each other...

@Sandra the hoodie is great! My daughter also wants her sweatshirts to be short and wide - seems to be the fashion, I guess (not that I would know). Glad your daughter liked the shirt.

@Ann, that doll dress is really beautiful. Such a nice design, and you really chose your fabric well for it to show.

@Bodgeitandscarper I bet it was difficult to make a pattern from a RTW suit... it looks soo complicated and I would not dare to fiddle too much with fitting... and the leopard pattern is just great!!

I finished my outfit. The sweatshirt is made from leftovers of other projects. The fabric for the leggings I ordered two weeks ago - never worked with athletic fabric before.

The sweater turned out like I hoped it would - as I only had short fabric pieces, I did a colour block one. I traced a full front and back pattern piece to determine the cuts. I had to think about the sleeves, so the lines would match up when standing. The pattern is my self drafted TNT sweater pattern.
The leggings are new to me - I used the Jalie Clara pattern. It is a simple pattern with no design lines, no outer side seam, no CF seam. But it has a gusset and the crotch seam/inner side seam sits a bit to the front, so no chafing at the thigh. Very smart drafting. There are two option: either you cut the leggings up to the waist, or you cut a separate waistband. I used the second option but wouldn't do so again: the inner and outer waistbandseam meets up with the back crotch seam and creates a thick spot at the back which somehow seems to pull at my underpants when in motion...  :scream:  also, I need to take out length above the knee, I hope it will have a snug fit there then.

All in all I am good to go out jogging in this!

I made the Jalie swimsuit about 2 years ago - I was afraid to work with the swimsuit lycra and the special elastic at the legs and neckline, but it worked out just fine and I have used it ever since (not so much since March, though...)

@Catllar Great to hear you've been busy... already the second project in progress! Which swimsuit pattern are you using?

As the machines are not yet back on the table (it´s either them or the christmas tree - but that's going out today) I prepared a pattern for a colourblock sweater I want to put on when running. I got several small cuts of sweater fabric, left overs from projects. I am starting slowly, just two fabrics. Not sure if my assumptions on where seam lines meet up on different pattern pieces are correct... I also ordered fabric for leggings, the pattern I bought last week (Jalie).
As soon as the tree is out I will take out my machines and start sewing. Looking forward to it!

« on: January 05, 2021, 13:45:13 PM »
You first check your actual size and look at the chart. 42 inches is size 42 (or European size 52). This is what the pattern inside should be marked with. The actual garment size is then 45 inches. It is really nice to give those actual numbers on the envelope, as it lets you see how wide the garment will end up being. The garment has to have some ease, as you would not fit into it otherwise (if it is not a lycra swimsuit, that is...  ;) )

If you got a similar garment in your closet, button it up and measure underneath the armhole across the body. Is it about half of the 45 inches stated in your chart above?  Than you'll be able to guess how big the garment will turn out to be.

@Ann I got one of those sewn basket gifted once, it is used by my daughter for toiletries... Good idea to reproduce.

@cakeymcdoodle  love your choices of prints! The corduroy skirts look lovely and I also got some of that galaxy print in stash (My daughter loves those galaxy themed jersey, but has already several tshirts from other space prints, so this is waiting for someone else).
