"Linen & Lace: This cool, crisp blouse was made for a charity event on May 5th. It is a Mexican tradition that formal events held on the beach require white attire. The front, cuffs, collar band and one layer of the collar are tissue linen. The sleeves and one layer of the collar are lace. The back is underlined in white batiste. Fitting darts are in the batiste only. The back is made of lace. The collar is four layers. The lace flower on the inside collar is to cover up a permanent stain from my iro. This is my TNT Lutterloh pattern with hi-lo hem. I love this blouse. I hope that you do as well!"

Your Favourite Suppliers / Guthrie & Ghani

I ordered from the place a while back, and in the parcel was a lovely note talking about some of the items I'd purchased (a men's shirt pattern and some espadrille soles) and thanking me for my order, I was SO impressed. Oh, and it arrived literally one day after! I must've ordered at about 10am and had it the following afternoon.

I just contacted them again because I wanted to colourblock a garment and needed advice on matching up weights of jerseys. They were so helpful in explaining the weight of the one I liked and how it would pair with others. They were clearly very knowledgeable (they told me the yoke fabric I'd picked was quite light, so the heavier jerseys would distort at the seam line).

They are expensive, but they are excellent too!

Tech Know How / Report an issue here ... adding @Mr Twingo
« on: May 16, 2017, 11:29:28 AM »
Hello everyone,

As we occasionally have issues that crop up, I'm going to make this thread a place to share them. I know we have the suggestion box thread but it's a bit unwieldy.

I'm going to ask that chatter is kept to a minimum in this thread. If you want to talk more about the issue, feel free to make a separate thread but be aware that thread won't be a place to specifically report an issue, and I might miss it. I will work through the bugs in this thread only.

I'm also going to ask that all issue reports are posted in the following manner:

1. Describe the issue as succinctly as you can
2. When does the issue occur? (Always, when I go on my profile, when I send a message etc)
3. Is the issue intermittent or constant?
4. Do you have a link to the issue?
5. What browser are you using?
6. What device? (Desktop, laptop, Kindle, iPhone etc)
7. What OS? (Windows, Mac, Ubuntu etc)

Please then always provide a screenshot even if you think it means nothing. Unless, of course, you can't reproduce the issue a second time.

A screenshot really helps me out.

« on: May 11, 2017, 10:19:35 AM »
As suggested by DementedFairy, we will be taking inspiration from Japan with its rich cultural heritage in art and fashion. Inspiration and ideas will be presented to help you choose a project, whether it be a quilt inspired by Japanese flora and fauna, or an inventive dress or top from one of the amazing Japanese pattern books with their origami-like shapes and complex techniques, or maybe just a garment for you using a popular Japanese style fabric print.
I'm also bringing the start date forward as there seems to be much excitement  :D

Introduction
In this competition you can produce

Dates
The competition will run from Thursday 1st June - Friday 30th June. You have until 23.59 on the 30th to complete.

Rules
  • Your item must use an obvious, recognisable Japanese inspiration. This is open to interpretation but we would ask you to make it obvious and not too grand a leap. Possible ideas include using a Japanese pattern, traditional Japanese toys, a print with a Japanese-style design, a fabric, or inspiration direct from the country e.g flora and fauna, colours, styles.
  • You MUST NOT cut your fabric until the 1st June. You can only wash it, dry it, prepare patterns, sew a toile etc. You cannot cut your fabric.
  • You must post at least 5 times in this thread to qualify. Please be involved and post updates!
  • You must submit at least three pictures; one of your uncut fabric, one of mid-construction, and one of the finished garment. (These pics needs to be submitted at the end, so they don't have to be posted in-thread unless you want to share).

How To Enter
Please send your finished make pictures (three required, as above) to sewalongs@thesewingplace.org.uk by the deadline.

How To Win
Winners will be chosen by public vote.

Prizes

As suggested, because we have a lot of questions about this, here's what the button names mean, you can also find this info by hovering over one of the buttons and waiting a little for the label to show:

A bit of info:
Long sleeved top, Butterick Pattern 3584: Material textured stretch viscose.  Had both pattern and fabric in my stash for a good 5 years. This fabric was a b^&&3r from start to finish, just pinning it I had to use the fine bridal pins as nothing else would go through it properly, even then I struggled with the bridal pins. Cutting it, the only way I can describe it was, the fabric was bouncy.Sewing it, on an ordinary machine (and I tried 2 different ones) there were skipped stitches and holes pulled in the fabric. Thank god for my overlocker, it stitched it like a dream otherwise it would have ended up in the bin. Pattern didn't need much altering just taking in at the sides as it was too big.

A bit of info:
It's A Wrap: Bought this fabric from my favourite seller Stitch Fabrics. Been in the stash about 6 months. Wrap collar instructions appear complicated at first, but made this dress twice now, differently each time! The collar is the most complicated rest just overlocked.

Smart Casual: Bought fabric at same time as for It's a Wrap. I can resist anything but tempting fabric. I interfaced collar but will make smaller next time, as it folds over at the back during wear. As long as notches are clipped and tailor tacks done, easy to put together, on overlocker. Will make both dresses again as make a good wardrobe staple. Both look good for casual and smart occasions.

Denim Jigsaw: Bought fabric 2013 from My Fabrics when I returned to sewing. Almost only time bought fabric for specific pattern . Katherine Tilton design and used fabric choice as per pattern. Follow pattern instructions and fairly straightforward. Had to do FBA and forgot to adjust the facings so had to recut.
Will definitely make again.

Number of metres used: 5.5m

A bit of info:
1) This orange and rust stripe cheese cloth must have been in the Stash for about 10 years I used it to test out the pattern Newlook 6292 lengthened a couple of inches and  sleeves altered from cap to short sleeves.

2) Same pattern a lovely Cotton Lawn bought from eBay 3 or 4 years ago full collar and front tucks for this version plus the longer sleeve like version 1

3) Newlook 6213 Made from 2 scarves a cotton seersucker fabric bought because I loved the fabric made to pattern but  annoyed that the bias binding looks like I tried to match it and failed… it was totally random

4) My Abigails party frock  Burda 6949 I cut a size too big unfortunately and as I wanted full length ended up gathering the centre front rather than recutting and making shorter .. made with ivory lining which I then changed to a dark mauve. I look better in stronger colours total fabric used

Number of metres used: 14m
