A bit of info:
Nightdress: made from dark blue single jersey fabric purchased from TP Fabrics in Warrington in September 2015.  Simplicity 3696, which came out quite long but I like my nighties long :)  This one was just run up on the overlocker with red cover stitching on the hems.  Did my own thing on the sleeves as there wasn’t quite enough fabric to cut them full length.

Tee shirt: made with remnants of three fabrics.  The floral has only been in stash about 3 months, the two plains have been there for ages. I used McCalls 7357 but had a little panic whilst cutting out.  Like Matt in the last GBSB I lost one of the pattern pieces! Fortunately it was a small piece, the front yoke.  From the main front piece (for the width) and the front neck band (for the length) piece I was able to more or less reproduce it, but lots of other things went wrong too:
I Managed to snip into the neckband so had to recut it. Bottom of neckband wouldn't lie properly so I ended up appliquéing the tab instead of using it to bind the ends. Neckband was obscenely low, had to stitch it closed for several inches and it still shows a camisole underneath.

Bra and Knickers: Mint green lycra has been in the stash for a year or so along with some pink and green lace, green strap elastic and various bits and bobs including the hardware. Had to order the plush elastic recently and although it's too blue that shouldn't matter as only the loops will show on the right side, likewise the channelling. Couldn't get any strong power-mesh in the right colour so I've cut the wings double and I've underlined the cups and frame pieces. Bra is Marlborough from Orange Lingerie and knickers are Esme from Evie la Luve. Used 0.75 m lycra, a length of lace, 1m bra strap elastic and bits and bobs of hardware from stash, I needed to buy the other elastics.

Blouse: Poly satin bought at Knitting and Stitching in 2015; chosen for the colours rather than the fabric!  I used New Look 6808, but inspired by a thread on TSP I drafted my own bell shaped cuffs instead of the fiddly faced and slashed cuff of the pattern.  Now that it’s finished I think I should have made the cuffs more flared, but I am pleased with the overall result.

Dress: This is made from fabric I can’t remember buying! although it might have come from Knitting and Stitching along with the poly satin above.  This is a polyester jersey with quite a lot of stretch and I used Vogue 9199.  View A but a bit longer and with the long sleeves.  The instructions said something about purchased bias binding for the neckline, but I cut a 2" wide crossways strip (stretch direction) and sewed it like a tee-shirt neck.  Another very easy pattern to make with the overlocker, so easy that I nearly forgot to take an in-progress photo, it was on a hanger with only the hems to do when I remembered.

A bit of info:
First Time Trousers: I am not a trouser wearer but when I saw this pattern I thought "why not", they are described as loose fitting through the hips with narrow legs. The pattern then sat in my box for 18 months. I have had the fabric, which is a light weight wool mix, for over 5 years, it was bought to make a skirt. The pattern was easy to put together although the trouser legs are wider than I anticipated. Although they fit they are more fitted around the hips than the pattern implies. I am glad I eventually made them but not sure they have converted me to become a trouser wearer.

Skirt: Made using fabric left over from cushion cover 2 years ago. Had to improvise as there was not enough fabric to cut all panels to correct size, I found some long thin bits in my scrap box so made 2 extra panels for the side and moved the zip to the back. Pattern is one i bought from a TSF member last year.

Shift dress: Fabric was purchased last summer from Fabworks in Dewsbury. It is a medium weight double jersey. The pattern is one i have used a few times and is quick and easy to make using the overlocker. I have added patch pockets to the front.

A bit of info:
Checked cotton P.J’s for my daughter: I’ve had this fabric lying around for a couple of years. A very simple make to get started on stash-busting,  with just a single pattern piece. The most time-consuming part was making sure the checks matched up. The waist was supposed to have a drawstring, but I’ve used elastic in these. I finished them off with a small bow stitched at the centre waist to indicate which was the front.

Denim Shirt: Fabric was purchased in August last year. (I’m not sure what I intended to use it for). The pattern has been lying around for longer. I was originally going to make this shirt in a lightweight grey cotton, but I think this denim has worked better for me. I remembered to check the fit, and cut the sleeves a bit wider to accommodate my slightly wider arms. I also added a bit extra to the side seams…just to be on the safe side. Easily found a set of suitable buttons in my button box. The shirt feels very… ‘me’… I can see myself making more of these. Maybe I’ll use that grey cotton fabric after all.

Blue jersey T-shirt: Another fairly simple make using some lovely quality, stretch jersey purchased from Birmingham market a year or so ago. I wear a lot of casual long sleeved t-shirt tops…(I’m all for comfort), and I liked the simple shapes of the tops in this pattern. The pattern is intended for woven fabrics, but I decided to give it a try with my jersey. I cut the sleeves long instead of short, ignored the darts for the bust, and ignored the separate facings for the neckline…I attached binding to my neckline and stitched it with a twin-needle. Easy! I haven’t been sure of the colour…A bit nightwear/pyjamas? (I’m sure my dad had some long johns in this shade of blue.) Nevertheless, it’s a comfy top and it’s already been worn several times.

My ( Daughters) Red Dress: This was intended to be made for my daughter. She chose this pattern from four options and she liked the choice of fabric, but sadly, when it was made up for a fitting, it looked unflattering at the waist.( She looked twice the size she is and who wants that?) ‘Vile’, was the word she used. I made the decision to finish the dress but to make it to fit myself instead.
The fabric is a stretch cotton sateen in a ‘Christmas’ red, and although it didn’t say so in the pattern, the dress is lined, excluding the sleeves.

Number of metres used: 9.7m

A bit of info:
We have a house in France which we are renovating (many people think are mad and sometimes I agree!) Last year we managed to get a table and chairs in the barn as a good outdoor eating place, and DH came up with the idea of a me made cover for them as shop bought covers are not the right size. This green and white canvas has been in stash since April last year and was ideal. I also had some plain green which I used at the bottom of each of the ends for economic reasons on the main stash, it also identifies which way it fits!

Some of you may have now spotted this... it's now possible to "like" posts! You should see the little like button next to each post. This allows you to add your appreciation for a post perhaps when you haven't got a tonne to say but just want to let the poster know you're reading.

This is a new feature, it may be buggy. Please post bugs here. If you can't see it, try doing a "Hard Refresh" on your browser, or alternatively clear your history.

Hope you like it.

Edit: If you cannot see the button please ensure you have cleared your cache.

Inspiration and ideas will be presented to help you choose a project, whether it be a quilt inspired by Japanese flora and fauna, or an inventive dress or top from one of the amazing Japanese pattern books with their origami-like shapes and complex techniques, or maybe just a garment for you using a popular Japanese style fabric print.

Not quite sure what to sew? You've been umming and ahhing over a few different projects but you just can't decide! In this competition, you'll present a couple of pattern and fabric combinations to your fellow forumites who will then put their word in on what you should sew. Previous sewalong entries / Sewalong suggestions and ideas?
« on: March 14, 2017, 19:59:20 PM »
Hey everyone! Thought I'd start this thread so we can start brainstorming ideas for sewalongs.

I had an idea for one that might be a bit controversial...

Pick My Project - you present a few different projects (pattern + fabric, or idea + fabric) to everyone else, say three projects, and everyone puts their word in to say which you should pick. The project that most people think you should do then commences about two weeks after the discussion.

Essentially it might push you to sew a project that you have been putting off for whatever reason but need a nudge to get on with... thoughts?

There have been lots of Q's about the White sewalong cropping up so although it's not for a few months I thought I would create a new thread where discussion can be had.

I'm also bringing the start date forward as there seems to be much excitement  :D

Introduction
This competition is for white garments only. Any garment welcome including undies, but not home dec or quilts. You must use white fabric for the majority of your creation (more explanation later).

Dates
The competition will run from Monday 1st May (bank holiday) - Wednesday 31st May. You have until 23.59 on the 31st to complete. Due to my being away from the forum you have until 23.59 2nd June to submit your entry.

Rules
  • Your garment must use white or a very neutral cream fabric! Preferably it should have no prints, though a white-on-white or very subtle print or pattern (e.g maybe through embroidery or jacquard) would be accepted. We ask that 95% of your item be sewn from white fabric. You can use colour on zips, buttons, bindings and interlinings. Use your own judgement when it comes to the 95% rule, or post a pic if you're not sure.
  • You MUST NOT cut your fabric until the 1st May. You can only wash it, dry it, prepare patterns, sew a toile etc. You cannot cut your fabric.
  • You must post at least 5 times in this thread to qualify. Please be involved and post updates!
  • You must submit at least three pictures; one of your uncut fabric, one of mid-construction, and one of the finished garment. (These pics needs to be submitted at the end, so they don't have to be posted in-thread unless you want to).

How To Enter

Entries should be submitted by email to sewalongs@thesewingplace.org.uk with the subject Stash Sewalong.

Copy the following and fill it out:

Username:
A short title and blurb about your entry, no more than 150 words:
Attach three images as stated in the rules*

*If you have lots of images to share, send them in separate emails. Just write "1 of 3" etc in the subject line, or zip them up. Or use WeTransfer.  We strongly encourage that you wear your garment or get someone else to model it for you. This is the main photo that people will judge you on and people really like to see others wearing garments, it looks a million times better than something hanging sorrily on a hanger! People are far less likely to be as critical of your body as you are, so please please please do consider modelling garments! These pictures will be posted in our gallery, on the voting page, and the winner's thread. If you have made a complete outfit with multiple garments, you can wear them together in one pic. Just state it in the email.

How To Win
Winners will be chosen by public vote.

Prizes
Thanks to Holly Berry who is donating the prize for this round!

1st Prize:
£15 voucher for Lovely Jubbly Fabrics
£15 voucher for Amazon
£15 voucher for high street coffee chains: Nero, Starbucks or Costa.

Runner-up: £5 value of the same as above.
