Patterns Discussion / Re: Simplicity half-price sale NOW
« on: April 07, 2018, 09:59:22 AM »
I can't get Simplicity from my sewing shop and having done a quick search of usual sites no one else seems to have the offer, shame as there are a couple of patterns i would buy but not desperate at full price.

In the wardrobe / Re: What’s...
« on: April 05, 2018, 18:17:24 PM »
First thing i ever made was a green gingham wrap over skirt when i was 13, before we started sewing at school. The fabric was in fact my mums tablecloth (she was not best pleased) and i just made it up as i went along. I was prone to "borrowing" items from mum and making them into something else. The grey wool blanket that became a cape, checked wool blanket that was much better as a jacket and a bag made from her chami leather. I never used a pattern until we had to in sewing class and hated every minute of being restricted.

I came across this site recently and ordered some lilac embroidered denim. Excellent quality, no shrinkage or colour bleed and colour is nice and deep. Will definitely be shopping here again.
I also came across this site as well. Not ordered anything (yet) but looks to have some nice fabric.

modified, sorry forgot to put nice before fabric, of course they will have fabric its a fabric shop

Fun with Fabric / Re: French Terry
« on: April 05, 2018, 09:52:46 AM »
My understanding is that French Terry should have a looped/pilled back and smooth front. Like any jersey you can buy different weights and it is often described as a light weight sweatshirt fabric. Is it French terry they have sent or have they got the wrong description on the webpage.
Would it be ok for t shirts or tunics?

Fun with Fabric / Re: Chalk marks
« on: March 31, 2018, 19:06:25 PM »
Sorry I don't have a solution but just wondered why you have so much trouble with chalk.  Do you iron over it?
Don't know why i struggle with chalk, i try not to use it too much 'cos i can never get rid of it. I never iron over it, or any other marker. I tend to use the air erasable pens normally but because i knew it would be a couple of days between marking and sewing i used chalk.
I wonder if it because it is old?

Fun with Fabric / Chalk marks
« on: March 31, 2018, 18:03:46 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place, but can anyone help with how to get tailor chalk marks of the wrong side of waxed cotton?
I am not really a lover of tailor chalk as i never seem to have a great deal of success in getting it of any fabric but i decided to use black (please don't ask why, i am just stupid) chalk on red waxed cotton fabric and cannot get it off. I have tried brushing, rubbing, pencil rubber, soap and water and as a last resort a scrubbing brush and nothing will shift it. You can see the marks from the right side, most are within the seam allowance so i can get round them but i have a black line all around the coat about 4 inch up from the hem line. (long story as to why).

I would recommend a magnetic pin dish
Don't forget to keep anything magnetic away from computerised machines.

Just thought of another tip re Style Arc. If you are buying more than one pattern do a couple of transactions then you can get both freebies.

:S Thanks Tamny. The webpage said the pdf was 32 pages or thereabouts. I don't think I have the patience!
Until recently i would have agreed with you, in fact i did post a short while ago about loosing the will to live sticking sheets of paper together. But i now think i am addicted, once you have done a couple they do go together pretty fast.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Another jersey question

The Village Haberdashery www.thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk has nice jerseys too in lots of colours.  It's a lovely shop, if you're ever in that part of London, too.
I looked at these, nice colours but the "Light weight drapey" put me off. I am going to have a look at the Tissu site now.

this is the thread i used for sewing the waterproof vinyl seating on our boat and used it when making the canvas covers. It is a heavy weight thread but you can get a lighter version V69 or try Gutermann Tera 60.

You can get 10 x 1000 cones for £5 or 4 x 5000 cones from Tyesew it is very nice thread, not at all woolly but a really nice quality and sews beautifully.
