A Good Yarn / Re: Easy Jumper
« on: November 20, 2017, 16:29:22 PM »
Is it any particular style you want?
For something easy I would suggest a fairly chunky yarn with big needles and a simple stocking stitch sweater with drop shoulders so there isn't a lot of shaping to do.  A multi colour yarn will make it more interesting than using a plain colour (like James C Brett chunky marble)

Patterns Discussion / Re: What is a Pattern?

I tend to go for styles with simple lines and don't go for frills, flounces or excess dangly bits of fabric.  So, I generally stick with the pattern although I might mix and match two patterns if I prefer the sleeves or neckline from another.  I am lucky too that I rarely have to make fit alterations apart from length.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: FPP Unicorn

That is most impressive Sandra.  I like the choice of fabrics for the head - subtle but effective.

I would agree with others - a 6" x 24"  and a square one, mine is 12",  to start.
Once you've done a bit you will have a better idea of what your 'must have' rulers are.  I've gone a long one 2 1/2" wide and a little 6" x 1" both of which which I use a lot.

That's beautiful.  I love the optical illusion that makes the curved lines.

If it hasn't got many pattern pieces I would just draw it onto squared paper and copy across to larger squares (there's a name for it that I can't remember).

Maliw, that is so pretty, don't let it languish in a box for 2 years.
I've got as far as getting the batting and backing fabric, just need an uninterrupted session for basting.

When the repair has been done can the curtains swap positions so that the same edge doesn't have to cope with all the handling?

A Good Yarn / Re: Any bobbin lace makers here?

It's something I've always thought I should do because my Maltese great grandmother was a lace maker.  Perhaps when I'm too decrepit for farming or beekeeping ......

Sewing Machines / Sewing Machine Bulb
« on: November 11, 2017, 15:45:24 PM »
My Elna 664 Overlocker has a miserable level of horrible yellow light.  I do have a daylight lamp on my sewing table but can't get it into a useful position to help when I am using the machine.  Either it's in the way or I bang my head on it.

The machine has a 15w bayonet bulb which looks pretty standard.  I was looking to see if I could get an LED to replace it.
I have found this but it doesn't list the machine I have.  It does say universal.  Would it be safe do you think to use one of these if the fitting is the same?

Buy that scarf and something else to go with it that will set it off nicely.  It will grow on you I'm sure.

Crikey Sewing Sue, what a thing to embark on. It must have taken you forever to get this far.  It's going to look fabulous.

Your Favourite Suppliers / 108" Quilt Backing Fabric
« on: November 10, 2017, 11:00:48 AM »
Looking for a backing fabric for my mystery quilt I came across this site.  Not cheap but the largest range of wide backing fabrics I have seen.
The website appears to be rather clunky in operation and doesn't have much information about the stuff but they would be contactable I'm sure.  Of course having found just the right fabric out of the hundreds there I had probably picked the only one that only had 1/2 metre left :S

They're both very different but I like the black and white one.  I like the texture that the various patterns give it.  But, with both of them, would more of it dilute the wow factor?
