Patterns Discussion / Has anyone made this pattern?
« on: November 17, 2019, 04:53:15 AM »
I’m using New Look K6391 to make a party dress,

in a poly satin (red just like the sample 😏). The toile I made of the bodice showed that I needed to add 5 inches to the waist- not surprising as the pattern measurements gave 28 inches for the size 14 waist! I’m making View A with the pleats at the bodice side seam which has made adjusting the waist difficult! I just wondered if anyone else has tackled this?

In the wardrobe / Stripes for me too!
« on: November 08, 2019, 15:39:22 PM »
I finished this top a couple of days ago, it’s Vogue 8950, here   The navy and yellow is a loop back jersey and the yellow is from a remnant bought in France. In hindsight a simple yellow Ponte would have been better for the yoke as they would have been a similar weight. Instead this is a heavy fleece back jersey which has very little stretch.

The neckline was way too wide for me for a winter top so I had to put a neckband on which is where the no stretch issue really caused me a problem. The first one I cut wouldn’t fit the opening no matter how hard I tried. The resulting neckline is I feel slightly loose but not so much that I won’t wear it, I’m reasonably happy with it.

In the wardrobe / Cardigan and shirt
« on: November 02, 2019, 08:13:02 AM »
My latest makes are this cardi McCall’s 6996 View C. This is a knit fabric bought in France, I am concerned it will snag very easily.

Before that I made https://www.sewdirect.com/butterick-b6026/ in a cream cotton seersucker again bought in France. Buttons were ordered from The Textile Garden, I have never bought from them before but was pleased with the selection.

In the wardrobe / When it all goes wrong....
« on: October 01, 2019, 20:52:58 PM »
When you’ve made a mess-up at the cutting out stage, a rescue plan is needed. 🙆‍♀️  I had planned to make this top View A, the one with the draped cowl neck rather than the attached cowl neck.  Fabric is a stretch velveteen jersey.
First issue was that I cut the front upside down so the nap was going the wrong way!  I told myself not to panic, I had enough fabric and recut it correctly. Then I cut the wrong front, that is the one for the attached cowl neck! How could I have been so stupid, there was no way the front I cut was going to make a cowl. I guess I was so focused on ensuring the pattern placement was in the centre front that I wasn’t thinking about the pieces themselves!  :S
Only trouble now was that I didn’t have enough left to cut the collar of View C.
So the rescue plan is the make this into a v- neck. I don’t normally hack patterns, I generally stick to the design with only minimal changes, so this will be a leap of faith! 😬

Access All Accessories / Beach bag
« on: September 25, 2019, 22:55:25 PM »
I made this beach bag for my sister- in-law, she and my brother are off to Portugal this week, lucky things! 🤨

I posted it to her and got a very excited message yesterday , she loves it. Phew! Always a worry making something for someone else. The interior fabric is made from curtain blackout lining so I’m hoping it will be waterproof, and I embroidered a cocktail!

In the wardrobe / A trio of dresses
« on: September 25, 2019, 09:37:39 AM »
Hi, I’ve been away from here for a while, but I’m back! I have been sewing though, seem to have had a summer stuck on making dresses! They are my favourite thing to make especially for the summer.

First was a Closet Case Charlie Kaftan, this was my first ever Indie pattern and I love it.
Second was Vogue 1500 https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1500 The shoes are the wrong ones for this, don’t know what I was thinking!!

A little less sure about this one although I love the pattern. The main fabric was a linen which I washed a dried 3 times as recommended on a website ( which I now can’t find! 😩). It reduced so much that I only had just over a metre! So I found a leftover piece from another project to complete a dress.

And finally this dress was made for the Goodwood Revival event I attended with Lachica and our DH’s. We went with the 60s , they were marking the 60th anniversary of the Mini. The photo was taken in front of one of the Beatles minis. I’d bought the yellow boots and handbag on EBay. I think it’s time for some separates! 😁

Fun with Fabric / Sue Barker’s jacket fabric
« on: June 21, 2019, 15:43:34 PM »
Love the fabric of Sue Barker’s jacket (she’s on the BBC’’ Queen’s coverage today. (It still smarts that I was there on Tuesday in the rain and didn’t get to see any tennis!😫).

I would love to get my hands on a similar fabric. Has anyone seen anything close to this?

A bit of a 'do' / Ideas needed for a Halloween costume!
« on: September 23, 2018, 21:06:18 PM »
So here’s the thing! We’re hosting a Halloween party this year (DH’s idea not mine!) so I need an outfit that doesn’t look half-hearted. 😱 My problem is that I absolutely hate wearing black!  Any ideas?

In the wardrobe / Blue and white striped top
« on: September 04, 2018, 15:53:43 PM »
This is Butterick 6058 View C, http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Butterik-6058.html

made from some lightweight jersey bought in France during the summer, although I did see almost identical from Guthrie and Ghani recently. Very pleased with this, I had planned it as one entry for my SWAKOP entry, but I may be running out of time as I need some bottoms! 😮

Fun with Fabric / Tip for pretreating linen
« on: August 15, 2018, 19:49:14 PM »
We all know how much linen creases - so much so I’ve avoided buying any for a while! Might reconsider though after reading this blog post from Sandra Betzina - sounds hopeful! Avoiding linen wrinkles

In the wardrobe / Kay Unger dress Vogue 1353
« on: August 15, 2018, 17:16:51 PM »
I made this dress Vogue 1353 a couple of years ago but it wasn’t a good fit, so this time I decided to make a toile, not something I do as a rule except on the odd occasion. The fabric is a very unusual woven type with a cotton feel to it, it has yellow and blue threads running through the weave. I loved it on sight. I didn’t have quite enough though for the length I wanted (below the knee) so decided to add a border hem with a touch of machine embroidery to tone with the main fabric.

This may be an option for my SWAKOP plan, still being formulated.

In the wardrobe / Top from scraps
« on: July 21, 2018, 13:32:27 PM »
I guess this may have qualified for the Scraps competition with a bit more forethought but too late now ! Never mind. The camouflage was left over from shirt dress and the navy from a top I made about 3 years ago 😏.  The trim I made from a strip of the navy(it looks a different colour but I must’ve switched the direction of the strip by mistake. 😫

In the wardrobe / Shirt dress Butterick 6333
« on: July 06, 2018, 22:16:08 PM »
I finished this dress a few weeks ago, this is the first chance I’ve had to photograph it. It was this pattern Butterick 6333
I used a poly crepe I bought in France earlier this year in a sort of teal/very dark navy camouflage design.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Here is the finished dress.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Wore it today in Paris ( a very hot day! 😚😚). It wasn’t as cool to wear as I’d expected but I’ll know for future similar extremes!

Events / South-east Sewing meet-up
« on: June 12, 2018, 08:55:52 AM »
This event in Wokingham looks like good fun - I just wish I could get there but we don’t come back from France until the day after!   :(  Really annoying as it’s on my doorstep!
