@purgatory Are you using the same pack of needles on both machines? It's just a thought but if you are it could be a bad batch of needles.

its being pulled down almost immediately, was sewing double fabric, the needle may have been too high a number for the fabric
I just don't understand how I've been doing fine for months and now it goes hinky

its an uten never heard of them before but gave it a shot and its pretty good when its working
its a computerized machine

Is it this one by any chance?

£220 for a brand new computerised machine with all those stitches is really rock bottom on price, and therefore rock bottom on quality.  As you are finding out you get what you pay for when it comes to buying a new sewing machine.  You do sometimes get a bargain with a used machine, sometimes not.

@purgatory  I see that you are in Wrexham.  Lucky you, you have a proper bricks and mortar specialist sewing machine shop in town and it's one of the best.  GUR Sewing Machines

Look at their website and go along and talk to them.  As an inexperienced sewist you probably don't need all the supposes bells and whistles and a couple of hundred different stitches to satrt with.  Use the money to get somethingmore basic but of a better quality.

@BrendaP GUR Sewing Machines are in Birmingham - did you mean Sewing Machines Direct which are in Llay, near Wrexham?

There is also Jaycotts in Chester which might be an option option.

Both recomended sewing machine dealers - and both a long way from me.

it is indeed that machine, I thought i was safe as there were hundreds of good reviews  :(

I will check out these shops though and see what I can afford and perhaps ring them up to discuss what I might need, though i was hoping to have decorative stitches to go on quilts that I'm heading towards making, well larger ones anyway I have already been quilting smaller projects

thank you for the websites and advice

This does sound as if the needle size is too big. Have you tried changing to a small size and are you using correct type of needle for fabric i.e. sharp for woven, ballpoint for knits, although a universal should deal with any fabric.
Try starting sewing a couple of mm down.

Some silly things can also make thread break: have you using the right size spool cap?
Are you using branded needles? It is false economy to buy cheap unbranded needles/thread.
What fabric are you using? is the thread too heavy/light.
Have you cleaned the feed dogs and bobbin race? You will be surprised at how much lint gathers and this can reek havoc. Your manual should give instructions on how to do this and should have a troubleshooting guide.
It's not easy being this perfekt

@sewmuchmore it always seems like we’re asking so many questions doesn’t it?   Makes you realise how much info and knowledge we must have gathered over the years.  Things we do now  switch out  thinking about it.

9 times out of 10 I'd agree with you except in this case.
I had one of those and used it without fault for a good 6 or so months before upgrading to a mush more expensive machine. Lack of muscle was my main reason for replacing.
Build quality is actually very good. Not a world of difference between it and its replacement brother.
There are literally hundreds of positive reviews on amazon, faceache etc and I've never once seen a complaint about it.
It is a diamond among rocks.
