That is odd.  Has it always been like that @Kitten
Might be worth getting it looked at.  For now maybe try another method.  Start a little bit in from the edge with the machine in reverse then come forward.  Should be a neat method.

This is what I do but I don't always judge it right and end up chewing up the edge of my fabric.

@Ohsewsimple I do start a little in if I'm not using the scrap of fabric.
It has always been like this, maybe it's just me.

@Kitten do you do use the automatic cutter when you finish sewing, it can be to do with the length of the cut thread that is left. It affects how it starts too.

@Celia I do, but tend to pull the threads out a bit before I start sewing.  Maybe I should try leaving them the length the machine cuts at?

I'll have a play over the weekend.

@Diane so sorry to have taken over your thread.

You could be right there @Celia I was watching a youtube video yesterday regarding this issue and she said the same thing and never used the automatic cutter, she used the cutter on the side of the machine and then when she started off again she lightly held the threads while it done the first few stitches.

Ah, maybe leave the thread as is @Kitten.  The machine is designed to start sewing without threads being pulled out the old fashioned way.  Try it and see.
