New bag for 2023

I'm just gathering all the bits and pieces that i need for the bag that i'm going to make. It's asking for 1 metre of quilting weight fabric? Can i use a 100% polyester? is this the same?

Where are you using the quilting weight fabric?

You can use anything you like although stretch knit would need to be stabilised thoroughly first. Some woven poly has some give to it, I expect that's why they're suggesting quilting cotton which I always think of as thicker than dressmaking cotton & with a tight, stable weave.

@Ohsewsimple For the main fabric of the bag

This is what is asked for on the pattern

1 yard 44” wide Quilting Weight or Décor Weight- Main Fabric
3⁄4 yard 44” wide Quilting Weight- Lining Fabric

Well it wouldn’t be my choice.  But it depends on the pattern and the outcome you want.  Can you imagine the bag made in that fabric?  I always think the main fabric  needs to be be fairly strong.   An evening bag could be more delicate than a general bag used every day where it might get a lot of wear being stuck on the floor, thrown in the car etc.  I know lots of bags are made from quilting cotton.   I prefer making them from cotton canvas if I can get it.  Bit tougher.  But there’s not a lot choice.  But as I say, depends what you’re after…..and of course the thickness of the polyester.

Well there’s poly and there’s poly.

What sort of fabric is it?

Is it a fairly sturdy weave?

If you can imagine buying a bag in that fabric you should be fine, anything too lightweight would probably be a waste of time.

It's difficult when buying online to actually see what you are getting. I've purchased some 100% heavy weight cotton, my bags don't get a lot of abuse so it should be ok.
