One way of doing this is to make the strip of fabric slightly longer than required and to start with a narrower seam allowance tapering to the required seam allowance after an inch or so. This means that the tube is wider at the start and in theory should make it easier to start the turning.

There is also a method involving straws and chopsticks but I've not tried that.

I would sew a length of piping, or thin ribbon, at one end, on the inside.  Then you just pull the end of the ribbon and the rouleau loop just turns through.

Always fancied one of those fancy turners, but never had one to hand when I needed it, and the moment passed...

you could use a safety pin instead of a needle, if you have have one small enough.  To get it started. tuck in the top edge as much as you can, and then pull the safety pin down through the tube.  Just a hint, if you cut the fabric on the bias, it is stretchy when turning it, which makes it a bit easier to get it right side out.

Rather than sew a ribbon inside I use a length of strong thread.  There is minimal risk of that getting caught in the stitching.
Life's too short for ironing.

You sew along one end of the loop including through the ribbon as well as down the side and snip the sewn end off once you've turned it through.

Just to clarify - when I did mine I threaded some string through after the strip had been made then sewed up the end  - when you say you sew the ribbon on the inside - do you mean that you put the ribbon in place before sewing the seam?  If so, how do you stop the ribbon being sewn into the seam?
(I hope I`m describing that clearly!)

Sewingj,
Here are a couple of links to illustrate the method:

I always turn mine with a hair grip. The method is also described in the Seam Work link that Hachi posted.

For future reference, might it be easier to just buy a rouleau turner? I have one and it's been fantastic. So so easy to turn things!
