Quilt Binding

I'm finally getting round to binding the quilt I made back in April but do I cut the binding strips lengthwise or crosswise or doesn't it matter?

Do you mean vertically or horizontally - I would cut where there is most length - Don't cut on the bias though - it will stretch like the very devil!
I have learnt by my mistakes: Sewing machines now are Bernina 720, Bernina 1008, Bernina 801 from 1981, Brother overlocker, ancient but works well

I was getting round to asking this question too.

I always cut mug rug binding on the bias - a Light side throwback (and Sister Mary Joseph  ;) ) - but wonder if it's not that sensible when you have a long straight run round a double-bed quilt.

There has, I know been previous discussion on this but don't have time to hunt for it as I'm trying to get painting finished so furniture can be returned to its proper place.

Lengthways is more stable, crossways gives a tiny bit of ease/wiggle room if the cutting and/or edge isn't perfect, but really it doesn't make that much difference.  I like striped bindings; they need to be cut so that the stripes across the strips regardless of the direction of the stripes on the bolt.  Diagonal/bias binding is only for when you are binding a curved edge.
Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

I cut crossways ,width of fabric but most often I use smaller strips to make a variegated binding.
Never  cut quilt binding on the bias

Not Imi but could she mean ‘weft of fabric’?

WOF is width of fabric, so cut your pieces across from selvedge to selvedge and when she joins them she uses a diagonal join.  :)

@Iminei And all the dressmakers here will be wondering why you didn't pattern match that  ::thinks::

Ooh, @Bodgeitandscarper , are you venturing a little wind-up?  ;)

Actually as a long-time lightsider my inclination is to match joins but, even if you do, when you get to the final join, it doesn't work - ask me how I know  :ninja:

Of course if you make straight joins it's a lot less noticeable but then you get lumpy bits in the binding.   ::thinks:: Dilemma!

Almost impossible with a pattern like that and you probably wouldnt see it once its turned over and sewn down

My eye was twitching and I was hyperventilating whilst thinking "Nope.  No, no, no.  I would have to match that up!"
