Hello all,

I hope you're all having a lovely week so far.

I'm after some help please?

I have recently been given my husband's late Nana's sewing machine, a Jones z-690 Foreign, and I would love to get it up and running again but I am a complete novice when it comes to sewing machines.

I am really struggling to find a manual for this machine as it is so old, and I'm hoping that someone here might able to help me find a manual, point me in the right direction of where I might be able to look, or even have some knowledge of these machines that they could share, to help get me started.

I found one website which looked as though it had what I needed, but for some reason the PayPal link didn't work, and the company have ignored my emails, so I am stuck as to where to go next.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Em x

Bill

Hello @Mrs_Robinson and welcome to the forum.
I'm well known round here for tinkering with sewing machines so take it from me, take your machine to a sewing machine repair shop. The horrors awaiting someone who opens the Pandora's box that is a sewing machine with limited sewing machine experience can't even be put into words. Trust me on this.

OK calm down @Bill  I am here to the rescue.  Berninas are very greedy machines and do require cleaning and oiling after every garment, some need oiling in the middle of a big garment.

What they don’t need is attacking with a screwdriver  :scream:

So go ahead a nice gentle clean and oil …Bill

Thank goodness I got rid of my little Bernina 215, although to be honest I never did clean it and I certainly didn't use any oil.

Since I've been a Pfaff sewing machine lady I think the only thing I've done is clean the bobbin area out and that's not very often.

My Brother machine doesn't need much cleaning and I  certainly never use oil anywhere near it.

Leaving aside all this chat about oiling sewing machines (or not) @Mrs_Robinson there is a pdf manual for the Jones Z690 on this site

https://www.sewingonline.co.uk/jones-manuals-2.html

scroll down until you find it. (Was this the one you tried before?)

There is also a pdf manual listed here https://sewingwishlist.com/jones-manuals-2.html, though the site looks remarkably like the previous one.

Most machines these days use plastic bobbin cases which don't require oil. Unless a certain specialist oil is used, it can even increase the degradation of the plastic.
My Bernina and I think most berninas use steel bobbin cases which when rotating at speed in a steel bobbin case enclosure causes friction and heat buildup. The one day I didn't oil it, I was quickly reminded by the unhealthy grating noise from that area.

My Bernina 630 asks for oil when it's thirsty.

Metal against metal = clean out debris and apply proper sewing machine oil.  Plastic = clean out debris but otherwise leave alone.

I recall being in the late, lamented Theobold's Sewing Machine shop in Luton and hearing Robert's horror stories of machines being brought in to be fixed because the dopey owner, thinking 'one oil's the same as another' had put *cooking* oil on the moving parts  :scream:  The only thing triglycerides and hydrocarbons have in common is that they are both insoluble in water.  Don't put the former on machinery and don't cook with the latter!!!

Hello,

This is the website that I had found the manual on, but their PayPal link didn't work :( still no reply from them either as to how else could pay. I also looked at the second link, and thought the same with regards to them looking similar. The contact names were the same too.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it

Hi Bill,

Thanks for this, i really appreciate your advice. Would I need to look for someone who specialises in vintage machines? Or should most sewing machine repair people/shops be able to work on this machine?

Thanks,
Emily
