Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Tilly and the buttons Sewing Rooms
« on: September 03, 2020, 10:19:20 AM »
I've had an email today from one of those Bloglovin digests that I must have signed up and which I usually delete straight away.  But, there was one for Tilly and the Buttons and her sewing room, so of course being nosy I went looking.

Everything was in its place as expected  but sewing space was limited as was room to the left of the machine, I like a lot.  Fabrics rolled for storage and on show, I like mine away out of sight.  Then we were offered to see the sewing spaces of her sewing friends.

What stood out was they all very similar, apart from machines, from cheap to expensive, even the colours looked the same and all had paid a visit to Ikea, all super tidy, all had chairs that wouldn't to me, would be very good for a couple of hours sewing.  Also machines but I didn't see any cables.

Now I know in my aim for light in a north facing round, I've gone too bland, which I aim to change but even when I'm tidy I look as if I have work to do, stuff around the machine etc.  These seemed to be just like something you would see in a magazine, nice to look but not very liveable for your average family with children.

So probably being catty but stuff their sewing spaces I've seen far better on here.

Sewing Machines / Newhome Sewing machine 366
« on: August 29, 2020, 15:08:53 PM »
My first every computer sewing machine was bought on a whim after I went into for a reel of thread (1992).  At the time I took home with me a brochure for the Newhome 363, which I think was the top range mechanical at the time.

Lately I've got all nostalgic wondering if I would  have still kept it based on the options it had and it's sturdiness.  So just lately I've been lingering on this, which wouldn't break the bank but I would have to make a Sophie's choice.

They look very similar really and I am very tempted   Terrible when you hope things get sold to save yourself from expense.

In the wardrobe / Jacket or not
« on: August 28, 2020, 10:33:31 AM »
Since the wedding is now on for next year, we've had the card to keep the date free, I've been sort of flitting on what I am wearing.  Last one it was home made jacket and home made dress.  Jacket fine, dress now too big to wear again without some alteration.

So, I'd decided on doing the same again as it will all be in a hotel so no traipsing round in potential bad weather.   The dress, fine decided on that and other than finding some fabric I fancy, easy peasy.   The jacket, I had sorted decided on a Chanel type, not too formal and I could use later.  I've got the Vogue pattern that lots of people have used in the past.  Actually cut out but changed my mind once and shoved away.

So visit to Linton tweeds to see what they had, which was around £35 a meter for one I quite liked.  Then I got a bit twitchy, what if it didn't look right and I'd spent all that money, bit faffy with their tweeds with the lining etc.  I quite like doing projects that take longer but what I don't like is the stress of having to stick to a time schedule, specially since I don't sew in December and January. For most people of course  that wouldn't be a problem.  Also I didn't want it to look Chanel, none of pockets features  that stand out.

Anyway I'm twaddling around with my Surface last night dithering on RTW stuff and thought I'd look at the Chanel RTW site.  £8,500  for a jacket. :faints:

So after lots more looking, dithering I think I might try it but, when you start sewing you forget what you have actually got in the wardrobe, and I remembered I had a nice cream Basler jacket with three quarter sleeves, which has only two outings since it was bought.  So since it will be April and in a hotel, that will be a good reserve jacket.

So that's my meandering over, carry on.

I want one of these but got no cash and no room at the moment.  They are currently £499 but I have seen this if anyone would like one and unlike me is not brassic.

In the wardrobe / The price of a dress
« on: August 20, 2020, 16:52:40 PM »
I was reading recently that the cost of shoes and clothes is going to rise substantially (or I might have heard, can't remember).  In those horrible adverts that line the side of newspapers, especially when you have taken a casual glance somewhere for something, they were reeling dresses at £7 each.  The most I seem to buy nowadays RTW is underwear and shoes  and I take care with the shoes as I want to be able to walk not wince.  Invariably they are more expensive than others.

So these dresses at £7, it would be interesting to see the quality of the fabric, the insides and how much each item to buy in bulk?

A few years ago I was looking for a bathroom storage drawer unit and wanted one like I already had for upstairs.  Couldn't find one but did finish up on a website, could have been something like Alibaba where something similar was being offered for bulk buying at a price of around £3.60 per unit.  I was flabbergasted.

So what price a £7 dress and what does the machinist get, if anything.

Would price going up on clothes have an adverse effect on price of fabric by the meter :S

Technical Help / Thread problems
« on: August 08, 2020, 10:12:04 AM »
I was all planned out yesterday, sew the darts, press, interface, overlocking, zip in, sew sides etc. I started stitching the darts and got that horrible clunky noise, I thought it was because I'd gone into reverse and hit air.  Re-threaded,  same thing happened, took the bottom out, cleaned, good blow out, re-thread paying a lot of attention managed until the last dart and started clunking again. So now I'm thinking I need another machine, which I hate because I then have to remember exactly how each one works, which is not as daft as it sounds really, different threading and bottom bits.  After three or four complete re-threads I managed to get it done.

I finished up leaving when I'd got the overlocking done, I couldn't be bothered to fight to put the zip in.  Later when I was wondering whether I might have a serious problem and  it might be new machine time I was sort of wondering why it should happen when it is such flipping steady teddy other times.  Then I had a lightbulb moment.  Looking for the thread, if I don't get a match I don't bother as I use Gutermann Mara 120, but this time I'd found a match, but it was two reels of some old Coats that I'd bought that came with a job lot of Gutermann threads.

So is this the problem?  I have had it occasionally before, solved by re-theading and that was it, soldiered on as usual.

Found it looking for some jersey viscose, the one I fancied was cheaper than Croft Mills as well.

In the wardrobe / New Look 6107
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:49:29 AM »
I wasn't sure of this from getting the fabric, seemed a bit what I call blowsy to me, I tend to go more on the demure side. Not a brilliant picture, cat stuff has got in the way of my sewing room mirror.

The pattern had loops on for buttonholes, which I did and removed, I didn't like them and mine seemed too big.  Buttonholes are easier for me. The buttons I bought for a McCalls dress, which I didn't like so used them but had to buy more and  guessed the wrong ones so similar but odd if someone gets really close and has an eagle eye.  I actually look as if I have a waist, when it's smoothed down.  I thought it was going to be a wadder but I think I might make it again.  The skirt works well as well and both easy to make.  I used french seams where I could.  It doesn't show on the pattern, or maybe a size bigger would have been better, but it parts at the bottom but that is actually the bit I like best, it makes it just that bit different from being just a blouse.  It's only buttoned on the protruding placket as well bound to fall  apart
if not tucked in.

Patterns Discussion / Another blast from the past
« on: August 04, 2020, 11:30:11 AM »
I remember making this in the late 80's. Now I would look at the front piece and say in my head "too fiddly".  I made a really good job of it though in some cream wool  fabric, which never seemed to cost very much then.

All done with my old 1967 Brother sewing machine.

Technical Help / Patterned fabric
« on: July 08, 2020, 15:27:27 PM »
I made a skirt earlier this year with a remnant, Lady McElroy's Stripey Palms. It was that gorgeous I even made it longer  than I usually wear to get value on the pattern.

So I've decided to make dress in the same fabric but got a query.  Would it be better with seams at the front or darts to avoid spoiling the pattern?

I'm currently using the pattern I'd picked out on a plain fabric which has four darts at the front.

Got a flashy new website and now have Lady McElroy fabrics on, although they seem more expensive than other places.
