A Good Yarn / Tension samples

I've accumulated a lot of left over bits of 4-ply sock wool. I weighed it the other day - over a kilo  :scream: -, so I've been looking at using it to make a 'tasteful' (ie garish) garment. I found a simple round necked jumper, suitable for 4-ply (allegedly) and knitted from the top down (why not experiment)  It is knitted on 2.5 and 3.5mm circular needles. According to my admittedly ancient needle gauge these sizes do not exist. I have got a 2.5 set, and a 3.25 and 3.75 set. In 'old money' 4-ply was usually knitted on 12s (2.75mm) and 10s (3.25mm).

The tension for this jumper is given as 21 sts and 24 rows to 4"/10cm using 3.5mm needles. I have tried out both 3.25 and 3.75 needles and get nowhere near that - 26 sts and 34 rows on 3.25mm and 24 sts and 32 rows on 3.75mm.

I have an old pattern (price 1s/5p so pre-1971!) for a 4-ply cardigan knitted on 12s and 10s and the 3.25mm tension square is spot on for that.

Do I try a 4mm needle or decide the pattern maker is lying and back engineer the cardigan?

I have too many quilts, and much as I like them, they need to come out of the cupboard and be rehomed where they will be used.

Almost free - a contribution to postage, and a donation to an agreed charity. Various sizes, colours, designs, traditional styles. Fabrics are all new cotton; wadding is either 100% cotton, or 80% cotton, 20% polyester. Sizes are in inches and approximate - I can measure properly on request.

Current Projects / Lemons or Lemonade? The Joy of Contrast

For many years, I have spent Sunday afternoons with a friend, sewing Linus quilts. We have a stash of 'stuff' - leftovers, donations, why-did-I-buy-this, and all stations in between. Naturally, at the moment our meetings are suspended. I have half the stash, arbitrarily consigned, to carry on sewing.

What do you do with a pile of fabric which has been randomly selected - a few gems such as a FQ with only a little square cut out, quite a bit of green and sh*t brown, hardly any blue, some acid yellow, a few scraps of red, a bit of purple, and a few neutrals?

I started with a plain 9-patch, and progressed through variations all based on a 3x3 grid. After I'd made 18 blocks, I decided to repeat each block so that I had pairs, one with a light background, one with a dark background. They will become a quilt, but I thought it might be of interest to look at these pairs and see how changing the value placement changes the whole look of a block. Not all of them have worked but that is interesting too. Why don't they work?  I have photographed them and they can be seen at the link below. Feel free to like or dislike them, I won't be offended.
