I think it would look good with plain. buttons in the 4 colours ( red, blue, green , yellow). You could do covered buttons.
Black buttons would disappear.

Do you want the buttons to be a feature, or just functional?
If a feature I agree with

;all the same design but in the four main colours, if you want them to merge into the background then go for black.
