Right needle thread keep breaking!

Right needle thread keep breaking!
« on: January 14, 2022, 15:46:20 PM »
Hi all, I’m having a nightmare with my overlocker and I’m hoping someone can advise, it’s a Brother 1034D. The right needle keeps breaking when sewing, I’ve changed the needle, re threaded, tried different thread but it still does it every time, I don’t know what to do. I presume it must be something to do with the tension plates as it’s all running smoothly otherwise with no issues anywhere else, but I don’t know how to get at them and am worried about taking it apart. Does anyone have any ideas?

Check that the needle is in the clamp properly they should NOT be level it is an easy mistake to make also try a different thread just in case, I know it is working on one needle but sometimes this can be a problem.

I would not suggest taking it apart, just check that the thread is running smoothly through the paths.

Best of luck

@Abi I have this overlocker and when i first used it i had this happen, all i can suggest it to rethread, take your time and make sure it's done in order, i usually follow one of the videos on Youtube, pausing it whilst i thread.
I’m a fabricholic on the road to recovery. Just kidding. I’m on the road to the fabric store.

I find this machine to be so temperamental! I’ve had it for a while so threading isn’t the problem, it was working fine then suddenly this started happening, it’s so annoying!

I know this won't be any help @Abi, but I found my first overlocker was temperamental and in the end I gave up on it and got another one!  The chap who sold the first one to me was very helpful and came out several times to help me but I just never got on with the thing. It would be working fine then suddenly have a hissy fit on the next seam when nothing at all had been touched or changed.

Have you cleaned between the tension discs?  There could be something there causing an issue.
Life's too short for ironing.

I had this machine foryears, only just changed it. You seem to have tried the usual. Could there be some problem under that part of the needle plate? Like a small bit of fabric or fluff or even a pin head or a metal burr caused by the first broken needle? If you remove the stitch finger it helps you clean the inside. Just an idea.

Also I sometimes had to rethread more than once to solve an issue. I can't see why there would suddenly be a tension disc problem per se. I honestly and truly never had a problem with this machine that wasn't caused in some way by me!

Are you threading the correct needle first?  With my Brother 3034 I have to thread the right needle then the left needle, so if the right breaks, I undo the left one too and start again.
Sorry, you said you've had it a while, you probably know this!

Well it has had a miraculous recovery and is playing nice again, fingers crossed it stays that way! I’ve recently had to change the upper knife after the end of it flew off and narrowly missed my face, and the needle plate after one of the little pins broke off so maybe was something to do with that.
I’m considering buying a used Bernina 800DL, does anyone here have any experience with that machine?

I have a Bernina 1150 and judging from the sounds they made when I test drove/ compared to a Brother 1034D the Bernina is a much better made machine.  Like most overlockers it has to be threaded in the correct sequence but it's been an excellent buy.

I have had a Bernina 800DL for about ten years and have been very happy with it.  These machines were made by Juki for Bernina.

I also have a Bernina 800DL which I purchased used around 11 years ago. Never had any issues with it and  it's still performing well.
