Access All Accessories / Re: Bag made with my own fabric

Any chance when you post something about weaving you can put weaving in the subject line I nearly missed this post and that would have been so sad

 :loveit: :loveit:

Will do. Thank you everyone for your kind remarks.

Fabulous... I’ve just started weaving, a 32” rigid heddle....it’s too big so I’m looking to buy a 16”.
I find the 16” is a bit limiting (not ready to attempt double width on it yet) and will probably go for a 24”, either a table or floor loom. Love the Saori looms, but they are a bit expensive.

Access All Accessories / Bag made with my own fabric

As a bag maker, I like the totes made from Harris tweed, but never found tweed in the colours I liked. So I started to weave some random colours together (simple tabby weave with acrylic dk with an occasional sparkly wool) and ended up with my first piece of ‘fabric’ to try making a bag (have done plenty of scarves before).
Will attempt a twill with better wool (maybe even on a larger loom when time and money permits), but for now, quite happy with my first attempt

Sewing Machines / Re: Best sewing machine for bag making
« on: January 25, 2021, 10:11:30 AM »
I have a 201K which is a great workhorse for most of the sewing for bag making, but it did ‘miss’ a few stitches on the thickest parts (more than 5 or 6 layers) especially when topstitching.
I also have the Janome HD9, which fulfils everything I need it to do - I can sew from 12+ layers of vinyl down to 2 or 3 without it missing a stitch.
The HD9 is perfect for bag making, especially when you don’t have room for an industrial. It is only a straight stitcher, and is a bit noisier than the Singer. There is a Fb page for the HD9.

@CraftyIrish as well as Spencer Ogg, look at Shamballa, Swoon, Maggy55, Blue Calla, Bagstock, ChrisW designs, RLR. Just a few of the many independent pattern designers. Some also have free patterns for download.

Vintage Machines / Re: Old Singer 28k - should I keep it?

I sold one recently, only because I didn’t have the room for it (and others).   :'( It sewed the best stitch, was good to have in case of power cuts, easy for young children to use and the watching the bobbin winding was mesmerising  :P

A Good Yarn / Re: Looms and Weaving in General
« on: October 31, 2020, 17:32:33 PM »
I bought a 16” rigid heddle loom about a year ago, and I love it.
I have made scarves, both in plain weave and ‘Saori’ art style, using all kinds of yarns, ribbons, etc.
I find it very relaxing, and much quicker to produce something than knitting or crochet.
When I eventually get my craft room, I can see me wanting a (small) floor model.
Just  a few of the ones I have made so far...

Looking at both twin needles.....are they different lengths?

Brenda P, We couldn’t get into foot pedal without possibly breaking the casing. Don’t have time to send it in for repair, and replacements are inexpensive.

I have a couple of vintage Singers for sale, collection only from central Scotland.

https://pin.it/1Kk8ILR

28K hand crank 1928 with lovely embossed grapevine end panel. C/w shuttle and 3 bobbins. £60

99K electric from 1956. Lovely condition. C/w original box and accessories. Connectors and plugs are there, but needs new foot pedal (had to remove as capacitor went!) £40

Both sew beautifully. Sad to sell these machines (the 99K was my Mums) but moving house and no room for them. Due to the weight of them, I would be looking for collection only.

Anyone local looking for a vintage machine (or 2)?

Patterns Discussion / Re: Simplicity 1080 - yes or no? Update
« on: June 14, 2020, 14:59:43 PM »
I bought this pattern and made it  all in one fabric. I had to lower the tucks and inserted the ties in the side seams at waist level. As a petite, I found the neck too big and gapey, so took it up at the shoulders. Didn’t suit the sleeve overhang, so trimmed it down to a proper armhole and made facings for the neck and armholes. Pockets were OK but sewed them at an angle at the side seams.
Other than that, I followed the pattern  0_0

Even the postage isn't bad - a fiver for posting 24m of goodies.

They quoted me £6 for delivery, for just 6m!

Sewing Machines / Re: Do you use your decorative stitches?
« on: October 07, 2019, 13:37:40 PM »
I use a lot of the decorative stitches on my Janome 8900, mainly in metallic threads, to add texture and variety to the ‘panels’ I make.
A small section is shown on my avatar.
Edit...sorry avatar not showing much detail
