Sewing Machines / To cover or not to cover
« on: November 09, 2020, 15:33:13 PM »

Do you cover your sewing machines every time you finish using them?

As someone with ME every activity, no matter how small, has consequences on my health. So it’s easier for me to keep my machine uncovered so that when I’ve got a little energy I can do a little bit.  This maybe as little as 10 minutes here and there or longer on a better day.

If I want to cover ‘Jessie’ with the supplied plastic hard cover after each use I have to remove the extension table, the knee bar, unplug the power and foot pedal cables which is all energy I’d rather use sewing!

Is it ok to leave it set up so it’s always ready when I am?!

Sewing Machines / Is it OK to use generic sewing machine feet?
« on: November 05, 2020, 09:42:44 AM »
I've got a Janome 5270QDC and have been looking at this Bias Foot https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-Binding-Babylock-Euro-Pro-Simplicity/dp/B07FLVJ175/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=janome+bias+foot&qid=1604569233&sr=8-7

This adjustable generic one looks like something I'd use more than the Janome metal one, but don't want to ruin my new shiny machine if it's not recommended  -<

Sewing Machines / Looking for advice on Stitch Lock versus Reverse?
« on: October 31, 2020, 22:58:19 PM »

Hope you are all keeping well,

My new whizzy machine has an option for Stitch Lock.  Is there any advice on which or when to use the stitch lock versus the reverse stitch?

Thanks in advance x

Sewing Machines / Anyone using Janome DKS100 / DC7100?
« on: October 04, 2020, 11:19:44 AM »
Hi Everyone

Been out of action for a while. It’s nice to be back as I missed you

A friend recently purchased a Janome DC7100 which I understand to be the John Lewis special edition of the DKS100.

Does anyone have any experience of this machine and if so, would you recommend it for general sewing?

Thanks x

The Haberdashery / Alternative to polystyrene balls
« on: August 09, 2020, 16:52:44 PM »

Can anyone recommend an alternative filling for bean bag cushions?  As a last resort I bought some polystyrene balls that you would put into large bean bags as they were light and cost effective.  They work well, but I’d rather not use them again as they are so not environmentally friendly.   Also I seem to scatter as many over the room as I get into the cushion

Patterns Discussion / Pattern Matching
« on: August 06, 2020, 14:36:26 PM »

Most of the projects I’ve undertaken so far I’ve used either plain or busy fabrics so I haven’t had to think about lining up patterns. I’d like to make a simple iPad cushion again, but this time with a larger print using the material in the photo.

Are there any tips or guidelines I should follow when cutting the fabric to match the pattern across the seams?

Thank I may be doing a lot of head scratching again! xx

Hi

I'm going to cover a rectangular stool with a piece of plain material and would like to add a little detail by including a piece of fabric in the middle. I'd like to make all the stitches on the reverse so it looks like one piece of material from the front.

I started down the route of cutting out the hole and pinning from the rear, but then the top fabric would pucker from each corner ...

I've totally confused myself using the little brain power I have in how to achieve this!!  :headbang:

Please can someone point me in the right direction as I'm going around in circles (or rectangles  :D)

I've attached a couple of pics to show what I've done.  Fortunately whilst I'm learning all this I've not invested in decent fabric so it doesn't matter, and I won't be offended,  if I've gone totally off piste and need to start again! xx

Hi

So here's a weird one  :headbang:

I'd been using my New Home 691 very successfully, yet I've come across a problem that is frustrating me like mad and preventing me from sewing today
